“We know that unaccompanied children, of whom there are over 400 in the camp and tens of thousands across the continent, are the most vulnerable of the vulnerable. They have travelled hundreds of miles without the protection of adults or families.
“They face exploitation in all different forms, including sexual exploitation, often at the hands of criminal gangs. Save the Children has seen it in Italy, in Greece and in Calais too unfortunately.”
Médecins Sans Frontières was unable to confirm having received the reports of sexual abuse against minors. The volunteers with whom The Independent spoke also raised concerns that a sex trade was operating within the camp, saying that boys as young as 13 asked them for condoms. They added that attempts to distribute rape alarms were largely futile as there “is nobody here to hear them’.

There are kids who are orphans in that camp, they are bound to be preyed on by some filthy animal. Why are we allowing kids to be alone within a sovereign country?
It makes you wanna weep.
Girl, 8, sexually assaulted by man in Greggs bakery in Leeds
An eight year old girl has reportedly been sexually assaulted in a bakery. The child was sitting in a Leeds branch of the bakery chain Greggs when the alleged attack took place. The girl was sitting with her young brother while her mother made a payment at the counter. The alleged attack took place at 3:30pm on Friday 12 February in The Headrow in Leeds City Centre. Police have released CCTV footage of the suspect and appealed for anyone who recognises him to contact them. The suspect is described as Asian, in his late 30s, tall, of large build, having a shaved head and a beard.

I talked to several children aged 13 and 11 who were unaccompanied and saw very young girls and boys with sad dark eyes looking at us expectantly. The camp volunteers, including many British women, try and help the most vulnerable so that naturally means working with the children. They have set up a library and we were due to have a meeting there to address specific issues facing women and children, but the increasing tension over the course of the afternoon denied us that possibility.
