It's hard to miss the huge leaps Archaeology is taking in the mere past few years. With satellite imagery we're able to spot ancient structures that would be easy to miss, or even impossibly to find, otherwise.

These ground structures were built in the shape of an elongated triangle and surrounded with huge stone blocks. The width of the base ranged from 6 to 15 meters and length reached 150 m. The structures reached a height of 3 m. The mounds usually contained single burials. Tombs were erected by the Funnel Beaker Culture community from the fifth to the third millennium BC According to archaeologists, people buried in these tombs were associated with the elders of the tribe and clan.

The discovery was made in the framework research and conservation program concerning the megalithic tombs in Western Pomerania, carried out in the Department of Archaeology, University of Szczecin by Dr. Agnieszka Matuszewska in collaboration with Marek Schiller from Dębno.

"For our analyses we used the project ISOK (National Protection Computer System against extraordinary threats)" - explained Dr. Matuszewska. - "Thanks to the database we have created and systematically update, it was possible to select places for testing that method" - she added.

Analyses were made possible by the fact that one of the elements ISOK is the Geographic Information System (GIS) for entering, storing, processing and visualization of geographic data.

It's good and bad. This imagery will also allow theives to find tombs to go rob.

It's been hard enough to decipher our history without supplying the crooked people with tools to get rich. A couple of people can steal valuables at a site and destroy history. This has been done for thousands of years, the technology just makes it easier to do.

That whole area looks like it may be an ancient city.

Are you suggesting the devices used to make these discoveries could be used by thieves, or that the images produced through the devices can be used by thieves?

If it's the latter, then wouldn't the location of any archaeological site be enough to bring the thieves?

Don't worry, if they do get hold of this for those purposes, they will find someone has been there before them.

Amazing..

The next several years, I believe, archeology is going to have breakthroughs.

We will soon understand the ancients more then ever, understand their ways of living externally and hopefully get a view of their internal life; philosophies, spiritual outlooks, and internal disciplines.

Fascinating, look forward to the future, to see the past
