TEHRAN (Reuters) - President Hassan Rouhani won a resounding vote of confidence and his reformist allies won 29 out of the 30 seats reserved for the capital Tehran in parliamentary elections that could speed Iran's post-sanctions opening to the world, early results released on Saturday showed.

Tens of millions thronged polling stations on Friday for a twin vote to the 290-seat parliament and the 88-member Assembly of Experts, which selects the country's highest authority, the supreme leader.

President Rouhani, whose reformists allies made gains in the twin contests for parliament and a leadership body, said Iran's election had given the government more credibility and clout.

This is news ive been hoping to hear....Perhaps there is a chance of some tentative rapproachment here......
The hard lineers will be slowed somewhat and the peoples voice may be allowed to swell in the ears of the religious overlords.....
Good on the Iranian people...they will eventually wrest some control back from those who hold and begrudge it to the peoples will......

It is a good step but, it would be nice if the hardliners would just step aside and let people have what they want instead of dragging their feet trying to delay things. I can not imagine how they will react when Westerners with money start pouring into Iran as well. You have wonder what the hardliners will do. Maybe we will get lucky and they will just fade away. Some how I doubt that.

They and the Russian's have been having some problems and Iran was though to have pulled out some forces but, also brought in Iranian back Shia militias from Iraq. So they still have a presence but, seem to be using proxies like Hezbollah and Iraqi's to do most of the fighting. They seem to feel Russia is trying to run the place while they have been their longer and they are not happy with Russia shopping the idea of getting rid of Assad either.
