my wife and i have been talking about her grand father. she does not know much about him as he died when my wife was 6. after that things were not really talked about.
we know he was in ww2. we know he had a purple heart.
i want to try to search some data bases, public records...these kinds of things to see what kind of info i could gather.
awards won. battles he was at. injuries taken. these sorts of things.
operating theater.....
she thinks he was at iwo jima but from the stories she can not remember if these are stories being told within other stories or was he really there.

the basic facts we know is when and where he was born. when and where he died. we know he was in ww2. we know he got a purple heart.

if anyone can point me towards any sort of databases of these kinds of things i could search through i would like to be able t complete a picture of him for her.

thank you

www.archives.gov...

That place can hook you up with service records. The more info you have for them, the easier they can locate it. Many records were destroyed in a fire some years ago, but outside of a certain time frame of service they should be able to help.

Theyve gotten better these days to search through Military databases. Relatively easy.
