The Navy will be certifying the E-2 fleet for inflight refueling, as well as adding a "wet wing" for land based operators.
They have currently flown the E-2D with a probe and made several dry contacts as well as transferred fuel on the ground through the system. Later this
year they will start directly with wet contacts. All E-2Ds after aircraft 31 will come off the line with the probe, better seats for long endurance
missions, and low visibility formation lights.
Northrop is also developing a so called wet wing, in which fuel is carried in the wings. This would be available for operators that fly the aircraft
from land bases. This would increase the time on station from 5 hours to 7 hours.
