Shelling by the Israeli Army in response to a bomb attack has killed a French peacekeeper in Lebanon. The U.N. peacekeeper was hit during a day of violence near the border of southern Lebanon. A Swedish officer was also wounded. The bomb blast was believed to be the work of Hezbollah.

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israeli shelling killed a French U.N. peacekeeper on Sunday, shortly after a Hezbollah bomb attack claimed the life of an Israeli soldier in a day of violence near the border in southern Lebanon, Lebanese and U.N officials said.

A Swedish officer also was wounded by the Israeli shelling, Milos Struger, spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon known as UNIFIL, said in a statement from the force's headquarters in the Lebanese border town of Naqoura.

Hezbollah said one of its guerrillas was killed in fighting with Israeli troops.

Both the Israelis and the Palestinians believe that the attacks of late have been aimed at disrupting the election process. There is a chance that we may see a bit of respite from the seemingly endless cycle of violence that has plagued the area for years.

What are the UN "peacekeepers" doing there? Apparently, nothing to curtail Hezbollah attacks. Hopefully a few more will get killed and they'll realize that being human shields for jihadis isn't the most constructive way of furthering their hidden agendas.

since when does defending your country make you a 'jihadi'? Hezbollah are not the ones making incursions into other sovereign nations, that is the work of Israel. Defending your country ON YOUR OWN SOIL never makes you a terrorist or a jihadi, no matter what techniques are used (percluding the deliberate killing of civilians, which Hezbollah never did. Israel on the other hand....)

Is Hezbollah a terrorist group?

Yes. Hezbollah and its affiliates have planned or been linked to a lengthy series of terrorist attacks against America, Israel, and other Western targets. These attacks include:
  • a series of kidnappings of Westerners, including several Americans, in the 1980s;
  • the suicide truck bombings that killed more than 200 U.S. Marines at their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1983;
  • the 1985 hijacking of TWA flight 847, which featured the famous footage of the plane's pilot leaning out of the cockpit with a gun to his head;
  • two major 1990s attacks on Jewish targets in Argentina—the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy (killing 29) and the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center (killing 95).

It was clear to those who think before they reply that no comforting was intended.
