I found this interesting to read. I guess pornography has more to give us than self/group entertainment...

I disagree in part with that article. The adult industry MAY have helped the vcr market during its infancy but I doubt it had any impact at all on the dvd market. I don't think there is any doubt that the internet was helped along greatly by the adult industry but it was also helped along greatly by file traders (software, movies and music). Lets face it without the porn and the illegal file trading the internet wouldn't have gone anywhere. Multimedia development on the net was definately boosted by the adult industry. All the best net technology is because of the adult and illegal operations. But the DVDs in my opinion are here in no part because of the adult industry.

The Adult Industry is set to revolutionize Broadcase Video pretty soon. They got an Internet TV channel now that allows you to download from the site for free. Basically its an Ad supported network just like in regular TV except its all ON DEMAND!
I will not post the link or name the site but do a quick google on Adult Internet TV or somthing like that and you should find it. Very graphic website though so If that sort of stuff offends you then do not search for it. Download speeds kinda suck though...

The bandwidth demand that the adult industry and illegal file trading has created has driven a huge deployment of fiber around the world. The price of bandwidth and servers has crashed. Four years ago I rented a 1ghz P3 server with I believe 512mb of ram. Maybe less. I was given 50 gigabytes of transfers a month for a whopping $300 a month. I just rented me a dual opteron 242 server with 2 gb of ram, 200 gig drive and 1,000 gb of monthly transfers for $199 a month. I can do so much more now (legally lol) because of the two groups I mentioned than I ever could have 4 years ago. Its not even close.

They are not stating that the DVD industry was increased by the Porn Industry. They are stating that DVD-R technology has advanced due to the actions of the Porn Industry. For example, recording the movies, editing them them transferring them to DVD recordings and now with the memory chip, store the movies and record them for better quality picture and sell them. Becuase of how they do this, has helped push the technology to a different level. If anything I just said made sense.

DVD-R and CD-R is all because of illegal file traders. When you see someone picking up a stack of 50 blank DVD-R's at the store its not because of porn. Its because he is downloading or copying major titles. Blank CD-R's were made populare by illegal file traders as well. Like those who trade software and MP3's.

So in the end a network designed for the sharing of research data and archives takes off commercially because of porn and bootleg copies of Titanic and the newest eminem cd
We are truly an amazing species.
