Mandatory Depression Screening a Depressing Thought

The United States Preventive Services Task Force recently recommended mandatory depression screening for all Americans. The task force wants to force health insurance companies to pay for the screening. Basic economics, as well as the Obamacare disaster, should have shown this task force that government health insurance mandates harm Americans.

Government health insurance mandates raise the price of health insurance. Consumers will respond to this increase by either choosing to not carry health insurance or by reducing their consumption of other goods and services. Imposing new health insurance mandates will thus make consumers, many of whom are already suffering from Obamacare's costly mandates, worse off by forcing them to deviate from their preferred consumption patterns.

Mandatory depression screening will not just raise insurance costs. In order to ensure that the screening mandate is being properly implemented, the government will need to create a database containing the results of the screenings. Those anti-gun politicians who want to forbid anyone labeled "mentally ill" from owning a firearm will no doubt want to use this database as a tool to deprive individuals of their Second Amendment rights.

townhall.com...

The government is coming for our guns and all Americans that are tested and found depressed will be labeled "mentally ill".

This is not good if this gets passed.

So ATS what your opinion to the government wanting all Americans to be screened for depression?

I think if you're dumb enough to not properly fake what must be a rather quick screening then you get what you deserve. Funny thing is that in this case you get drugs... it usually goes the other way around. Government likes to take those away unless it's being pushed by an approved source.

once you allow a govt to get away with forcing Americans to buy healthcare, you can expect the govt to eventually mandate what the American people eat and do under the guise of helping to keep down the cost of healthcare. The govt forcing a citizen to do anything is a very bad idea IMHO

Not all Americans - law enforcement agents, military personnel and politicians will somehow breeze through the test and pass with flying colours - average Joe US citizen will be found to be depressed, even if you're not.

No more soup guns for you

So this is how Obama is going to enforce his last batch of Executive Actions.

Very clever.

Watch for future "adjustments" to the classifications too.

The Obama Administration has entered a new rule in the Federal Register.

It apparently amends some old rule(s) that concern HIPAA privacy.

Now it seems a doctor can report some "mental illnesses" and those reports will be on the FBI firearms background check system used in gun background checks !!

They're turning up the heat on the boiling water for all of us frogs.

Obama.Care II is here

Doctors can report some mentally ill patients to FBI under new gun control rule

federalregister.gov/2015-33181

Delivering on its promise to deliver "common sense" gun control, the Obama administration on Monday finalized a rule that enables health care providers to report the names of mentally ill patients to an FBI firearms background check system.

The action was one of a series of steps that President Barack Obama had called for in January 2013 in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings to curb gun violence, but the rule was not published until today.

While the 1993 Brady law prohibits gun ownership by individuals who have been involuntarily committed, found incompetent to stand trial or otherwise deemed by a court to be a danger to themselves or others, federal health care privacy rules prohibited doctors and other providers from sharing information without the consent of their patients.

I can just imagine how much crap is going to come out of this. "oh looks like you're depressed, you're mentally unfit for [list of jobs, list of rights, list of children you're allowed to have, so on and so forth]"

This sounds like a control-freaks dream come true

In the first place half the people I know are depressed at least half the time, that does not a terrorist make! It is an invasion of privacy for sure!

In the second place we clearly are letting our rights slip through our fingers on slip at a time until soon there will be none!

Preventive Services Task Force - Final Recommendation Statement Depression in Adults: Screening

General adult population, including pregnant and postpartum women - The USPSTF recommends screening for depression in the general adult population, including pregnant and postpartum women. Screening should be implemented with adequate systems in place to ensure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and appropriate follow-up.

Recommendations made by the USPSTF are independent of the U.S. government. They should not be construed as an official position of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

This won't go anywhere.

Secondly it makes one wonder if this group is pushing Obama's anti gun agenda. First he tries to remove / prevent ownership of guns if your names on a watch list. Now the mandatory mental health screenings, screenings that can result in a denial of owning firearms.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

I know, right. But we do not live in the land of the free, or Home of the Brave any longer. Pretty soon the United States will resemble North Korea.

This sounds Very strange to me,as a South African. My government doesn't give a hoot about how depressed the SA population is-as long as you pay your taxes you could be playing russian roulette all the day long..very odd.
