The next member of the Airbus neo family has made its first flight. The aircraft made a five hour and 29 minute flight. The A321neo is powered by the CFM Leap-1A engine, instead of the Pratt&Whitney geared turbofan. The test flight checked engine vibration, basic flight envelope, and systems operation. The neo test program has completed 1,900 hours to date, with the A320neo.

There are rumors that the Max is going to deliver to the launch customer early. Airbus is leading in orders, but the Max is doing well already, even though it's early in the program.

I think these are 2014 numbers

A321neo total orders: 4414 (@ $453 bn)

Launch in 2017 ?

Airbus said there's no change in plans for delivery, with the Pratt-equipped A321neo still expected to reach customers at the end of 2016, and the CFM-equipped version in early 2017.

737max total orders: 2931 (@ $267 bn)

Launch 3rd quarter 2017

The Max stands at 2.827. The neo stands at 4,471 for all three versions, neither counts options. The A321neo is at 1,094. Airbus won the order fight in 2015, but Boeing won deliveries.

Both the 787 and the 777X are introducing some interesting and advanced technologies. The 787-9, and I believe -10 are using Hybrid Laminar Flow Control systems, and the 777X is introducing folding wingtips along with other advanced aerodynamic systems.

So the testing program is going well. They've already gotten the tail strike portion out of the way.....oh, wait. The aircraft was flying at the Perpignan airport in France yesterday, and suffered a tail strike that caused "significant damage" to the fuselage. It will be out of service for several weeks getting repaired. Airbus doesn't expect any delay to the delivery schedule as a result.
