What a coincidence, the top least corrupt countries all incorporate socialism! Maybe Bernie is on to something?

I feel strangely comforted by the fact that my country of residence (The Netherlands) made the top 5....

What I mean is that I feel reassured that it would seem to be a reasonable placing for a country that lets the US station nuclear missiles here, joins in happily with any "coalition-led" proxy war and...well, many other things.
Thanks for bringing this to ATS's attention.

ETA: Not quite awake yet and I read it wrong. Apparently it's "clean" here according to the list. I have a differing opinion.

Who's have thought they would be so high on the list?

If you put the populations of the 16 "countries" ahead of the US together they probably don't even equal the size of it. These "perfect" govts are easy to model on a micro scale.

Denmark is PERCEIVED the cleanest according to TI - by its own inhabitants perhaps?
My country of birth is ranked number 50, and all of Western and Northern Europe precedes it... Well, that is a large heap of bull. While everyone knows, east and west, that our Prime Minister, ruling by hand, has been giving state moneys, contracts and opportunities to his closest family members and friends - and he no longer makes this a secret. So much so that a leading sociologist published a volume (The Hungarian Octopus) which makes a case that the post-Communist formation of the Mafia Government is a new formation in history.

The US Government made it public last year or before that six leading government figures are not welcome in the US an more as private citizens because they are involved in high-ranking corruption. One of them, the head of the National Tax Authority proudly confessed that she was one of the six. This is based not on PERCEPTIONS but simple definitions of mixing job or authority with private power and/or money.

Ukraine, ruled by many mafia blocks, comes WAY AFTER?
Did anyone catch that?

I'll just say that it's suspicious (to me) that these "Transparency International" people seem to favor socialist countries.

Especially when we know darn well that morbid internationalism and socialism are such frequent bedfellows.

Are you saying that Somalia is a conservative Utopia? Yes, I know it's a strongly religious nation with little government interference and plenty of guns so people can defend themselves from tyranny but still....

Damn, world super power and only a tie for 16!

*Walks away proud of our lesser evil. LOL

Really though, the most transparent super power is the US. Says allot.

Northern Europe can say allot, but I did notice that France is not at the top. I stopped looking for Russia. /wait, they are worse than Pakistan by several positions. LOL.

The human cost of corruption is huge, yet all too often leaders
with notoriously corrupt records continue to enjoy lives of luxury
at the expense of people living in grinding poverty. It’s time they
faced the consequence of their actions.
“Corruption will stop only when we collectively fight against it,”
says photographer AM Ahad . “It is crucial that we change the common
mentality of accepting corruption and treat the crime as the terrible
thing that it is.”

Money and corruption are ruining the land, crooked politicians betray
the working man, pocketing the profits and treating us like sheep,
and we're tired of hearing promises that we know they'll never keep.
Ray Davies

The accomplice to the crime of corruption is frequently our own indifference.
Bess Myerson

The fight for justice against corruption is never easy. It never has been
and never will be. It exacts a toll on our self, our families, our friends,
and especially our children. In the end, I believe, as in my case, the price
we pay is well worth holding on to our dignity.
Frank Serpico

It's interesting that these themes of crime and political corruption are
always relevant.
Martin Scorsese

Our country is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road
it will pass to destruction, to wit: by consolidation of power first,
and then corruption, its necessary consequence.
Thomas Jefferson

All of the most corrupt countries are authoritarian hellholes dominated by communists, warlords, and sharia law.

Somalia is under sharia law with local cleric rulers it is NOT an anarchist country .
