Yea I got it. Though since this is in breaking news and not world war three, I took it as just that: news. Not doom porn.

Never was just being facetious....

Just tired of the fear porn and war drum beaters.

Not sure how pointing out a breaking news story about the weapon capabilities of NK is fear mongoring or war drum beating. In fact, sitting with your head in the sand until something happens is probably a bad idea. Being on alert, informed, and preemptive, is the way to avoid us ever having to talk about actually being attack by NK or another rogue nation.

I would venture a guess that you are receiving a lot of news which has been processed for the benefit of some and fed that. All else, lest you have a direct source and Korean language ability, is probably propaganda....

As such I ask my first question once again:

Can someone please tell me the last time North Korea attacked the US?

Answer: Never; that is why they are still there!

Rogue Nations? do you mean like the following "rogue Nations":

Iraq
Libya
Afghanistan
Syria
etc...

Are these the reasons we should be pre-emptive?

Name some stuff that they did to us....

Well, to be fair, my definition of preemptive includes preparation not necessarily "preemptive strikes." Preemptive can be defensive as much as offensive.

No, that was a Chinese satellite launched last month. It's apparently their version of a GPS style system.

The entire 7th fleet is spit-ball distance from NK; it is probably not possible to be more prepared and in-your-face than that.

The point I am trying to make is that it may not be the news, it is the manner that its is portrayed that makes it fear porn for the masses.

Not anyone here, just the people that read headlines and start yelling for a "glass-parkin' lot"

Pretty strange updates: South Korean media is saying the launch may have failed, the Japanese are saying parts of, or all of, the rocket fairing has splashed down in waters off Okinawa, and the Pentagon is saying their tracking data shows no threats to the US or allies.

ETA - to clarify, the Pentagon confirmed they detected a missile launch, but that there was no threat.

I'm really skeptical about NK having the technology to get a missile to the US mainland. Maybe in another 10 or 15 years they'll be close.

Their H Bomb wasn't a real fusion weapon. It was an enhanced fission device. So that's a bunch of bull as well. And I'm very skeptical they're anywhere near getting it to a size that can be used in the payload of one of their missiles.

I remember a recent news article that said an NK spy had been caught in the US trying to purchase restricted technology. He was trying to buy a military grade 3rd generation IR scope. While that's not a trivial piece of technology, it doesn't impress me that they can't build something like that in their own manufacturing facilities.

The biggest threat that NK has is the massive number of missiles and rockets that are just across the DMZ that are aimed at Seoul. Any attack on NK and they'll unleash hell on the South Korean capital.

Isn't just your definition, which I think is worth mentioning. Preemptive action is something done to delay something else from happening. Defensive measures very much fit in to that definition. It's not just limited to first-strike actions, as others would have us believe.

Yes. I am skeptical of anything from the mouth of the propaganda machine that is NK.

Same South Korean media source is now reporting that the missile disappeared from radar during fairing separation stage. No other confirmation that I've found so far.

According to Japanese sources it split into five pieces.

Sounds like some quality engineering and manufacturing still going on in the NK then.

What, in your sme opinion, is keeping them from putting together a decent long range missile? Processes? Materials? Know-how?

Thanks. Updated the main post.

North Korea launched its rocket carrying a satellite today and Japanese officials said the rocket split into 5 parts.

One part fell into the Yellow Sea, about 150 kilometers west of the Korean Peninsula. Two others landed in the East China Sea, about 250 kilometers southwest of the peninsula.

The fourth and fifth pieces flew over Japanese airspace with the fourth landing in the Pacific Ocean. The last piece continued southwards.

A little bit of each. Misinformation could be spread to them in various ways too, thereby sabotaging their methods.

EDIT: And maybe unlikely, but the people building them may be purposefully sabotaging them because they know how crazy their leader is....
