Haven't been to Vegas Lately have you? Most Nickel slot machines in Vegas no longer accept coins, nor do they payout in coins, they use paper money and payout in bar coded paper that can either be re·deemed for cash or inserted into another machine of any denomination. The only slots that still used coins and payout in coins are dollar machines.

I only know this because; I was in Vegas for MineExpo in September and made my mind up I would never go there again. They have taken all the fun out of gambling now.

I am talking about the major casinos, I would assume he still could find some in one of the smaller casinos though.

I'd wager the treasury was transporting something secret for another agency, and some professional thief found out about it. The nickels could make a good haul if you could get them to banks in several locations using paid mules, but no way it's feasible to offload 40k pounds of nickels while on the run from the feds. I doubt anyone would be dumb enough to risk the sentence probably attached for that looting spree. How did they get it away from the truck?
Did invesitgators look for any recent holes in the area? I wouldn't put it past them to bury it, and come back a long time later to dig it up. This was an interesting story to me partially because of the type of truck used. I thought currency was always transported in armored trucks, but I guess not huh?
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing is a cover up, but I doubt the driver was the target. He might be complicit in the robbery, he might be the mastermind even, but I doubt that he was the target of a government funded assasination. They were probably transporting a bunch of the CIA's crack, and the FBI found out about it. They stole the evidence to use later in court, they're sitting in a hotel room right now, flicking nickels at each other.

How much is the metal in a nickel worth??? He could melt the coin-nickels down and sell them for the value of their metal. It would be better than trying to spend $180,000 in nickels.

MIAMI - Police hit pay dirt Friday, digging up 3.6 million nickels that disappeared in December along with a trucker who was supposed to deliver them to the Federal Reserve Bank in New Orleans.

Authorities found the $180,000 in coins buried in a 4-foot-deep hole in the property behind a suburban Miami home. The nickels, still stored in their Federal Reserve bags, were in a wooden box covered with a plastic tarp.

They still haven't found him.

Normaly they find stuff like this by finding the cullprit. This time they found the loot by pure chance it seems. They searched the house because there were drugs in there.

wow, this went from a theft, to robbery and possible murder

I think the punishement should be a severe beating by the items taht were stolen... litterally nickel and dime them to death .. and to make it work I will donate the dime
