A meme is one of those pictures with a comment or phrase that goes "viral".

They usually get used over and over again with differing phrases.

Think of that guy from ancient aliens and the "I'm not saying it's Aliens..."

That is a meme.

Basically, a meme is data carried from one person to another, by non genetic means, that has to do with the culture that person happens to be a part of. Religion could be considered to be a meme, as could musical preference or style choices associated therewith, for example.

In essence, it is a concept, idea, or series of same, and can be transmitted from person to person visually, textually, verbally, and by any method other than genetically.

more correctly - an idea or concept spread from person to person

it is NOT just a silly picture

the picture is just the medium of spreading the meme

I've heard it described as a unit of social currency.

Sounds cool but I'm not really sure if that doesn't raise another question, like "errrrrr, what's social currency"?

A meme is a trope, more or less.

I think it was Richard Dawkins who coined the term.

Memes were introduced into discourse during the civil war when the north and south stopped fighting in Virginia one October afternoon and instead traded pictures of amusing cat sketches they drew in silly situations with captions that poked some fun at the war.

Later memes were used in the propaganda war to destroy the spirits of the nazis. Audio recordings of Hitler were given out with "translation" insinuating he was actually speaking about either butts, his disappointment in his art class paint selection, or how his mother was actually a terrible cook and he had to endure endless family meals.

Finally memes became a institutional part of western culture when Reagan officially recognized the "Wheres the beef" slogan as a national treasure, allowing many memes, meems, me-mes, and maymays to strive under one banner together to make all discussions from that point on worthy of "the lulz".

I never really got a grip on where the term originated or in pronunciation but... over time, it became pretty clear what it was.
