I did wonder about that but couldn't find any photos that confirmed it - one I saw from Apollo 12 looked a candidate but I decided it was wishful thinking on my part

Kudos for honest reporting

FIFTH ADDITION TO OP:

Here is a link to a NASA photo with a good number of what appears to be stars in the background:
www.lpi.usra.edu...

During the time this photo was taken it was not within the computing power of the time to correctly place the stars on the moon in the sky. Therefore, with the aid of such a program today that places such stars on, this photo can be used as evidence of either legitimacy or fakery of the photo.

Then do it.

I'd disagree that it would have been impossible to place stars in the lunar sky correctly, otherwise the use of stars to navigate and fix positions wouldn't have been possible.

What appear to be stars in this image aren't stars, they are faults in the photograph (the blue dots are a well documented feature).

Venus, however, has been spotted from the surface, and Apollo 16's UV telescope produced images that can't b done from Earth.

Stars and planets were photographed in lunar orbit and cislunar space.
