******Disclaimer: I am one of the few republicans on ATS...

Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders is scheduled for a closed door meeting with President Obama on Wednesday 27th, January 2016.
President Obama has yet to endorse a democratic candidate which, to me, is entirely surprising.
I cannot fathom why he has not endorsed his former Secretary of State....I cannot fathom George W. Bush withholding an endorsement for Condoleeza Rice...
----To be fair, I find Ms. Rice to be a wholly more intellectual and awe inspiring person than Senator Clinton...

But I digress....the Republican in me hopes beyond all measure that President Obama will endorse Bernie and send the democrats into a tailspin which could split their voting blocs and usher in a new republican president and congress...

Do y'all think the president will endorse Bernie Sanders?

Anyhow, any opinions are always welcome and please keep it on topic...

Obama is in a Catch 22. If he endorses someone other than Hillary, she will very likely be brought down and (in all probability) knows enough about stuff like the Fast & Furious and the IRS scandal to bring Barack down with her. If, however, he endorses Hillary, the GOP and FBI will bring her down and he'll be saddled with a public connection to her as she falls. He cannot win this one and, I suspect, she only represents the first of several dominoes in his administration who will be taking falls in the near future. Fast & Furious is far from over and the Lois Lerner scandal will follow him for many, many years.

So no, I don't expect him to endorse Sanders. If anything, I'd expect him to try to talk Sanders into something different, like running as Bloomberg's VP.

More likely the President will attempt to convince Sanders to end his campaign and throw his support behind Clinton.

Obama will emphasize the importance of presenting a strong and united front as early as possible to counter the GOP's attempts to unite behind one or another polarizing candidate.

He'll likely dangle some sweet deal in front of Sanders to seal the deal.

Would Sanders bite?

Would he buy the old "For the good of the Country and in the best interests of the Party" line?

a reply to: Christosterone I like Rice way better than Clinton, and I'm liberal as hell.

Bernie has so much appeal for being non establishment, it's almost a bonus if Obama doesn't endorse him.

But I wish he would. Go Bernie!

No, I think it has something to do with this,

Sanders blocks Obama nominee to lead FDA, citing industry ties

Btw, there are way more than a few republicans on this site.

I Cant believe people arent embarrassed to call themselves a republican with the GOP candidate track record? Or that actually believe there is a differenve between the two parties.

The republican party has been taken over a long time ago by people who love big govt like the democrats.

As long as people endorse a GOP or DNC candidate it doesnt really matter.

You will continue to get corporate friendly regulations on the back of the middle-class.

However imo I dont think Obama likes Hillary ,but he is an establishment team player so i would be very surprise if he doesn't endorse her.

He will be informing Sanders that Hillary's arrest is imminent.

And he will wish him the best of luck in November.

I dont remember offhand any sitting president that endorsed anyone in the primaries. I could be wrong, but that seems like a very dumb thing to do regardless of who is running

Once the people are selected, then I imagine its not uncommon for a sitting potus to endorse their party's candidate

In saying all that, Bernie supposedly can easily beat either Trump or Cruz among independent voters, so there could be some sort of informal querying going on there to see if he has the strength to deal with the running..
...also to tell him about the alien menace

If Obama believes Hillary is going down regardless, he has no reason to support her. He will still pardon her at the end of it all but if she's losing and about to be out of politics she is rather powerless. Then again, with the animosity between those two I could almost see Obama not pardoning her out of principal but instead only offering it if she remains silent.

There's been speculation that these "leaks" about the investigation of Hillary's email servers somehow is coming from the White House. Perhaps not Obama himself, but he probably on some level knows about it if it's happening. Sort of a "I don't want to know the details so I won't be able to answer questions" deal.

If so, Obama might be giving some encouragement to Bernie, or a heads up and insight into the Clinton campaign. Remember Obama ran against her. He knows how she runs a campaign, he knows how she works/operates. He might want Sanders to win, and dislike Hillary and be trying to "help" without actually getting involved. Just some words of advice over coffee.

The FDA thing can be used as a legitimate smoke screen.

This and the new executive order regarding campaign finance. I don't think sitting president's vocally endorse candidates.

Seeing as Hillary is running as Obama's third term, I seriously doubt that he'd come out in support of Bernie.
