A missile isn't an interceptor though, which is what was asked about.

Do you believe such an option would ever be necessary?

So, what, if it fired off a missile, yet was going faster than the missile it would shoot itself?

They'd have to slow down to fire a missile or develop new missiles with a higher top speed. The stress of being that fast when launched wouldn't be good for the missile.

Wasn't lockheed confident they could a launch missile (or was it bombs) from a Sr-71 at Mach 3ish? Slowing down to just mach 3 and launching is still pretty good.

A lot of missiles have a top speed near mach 4. Firing a missile at mach 3 puts stress on it, but it's still got room for that stress. Firing a mach 4 missile at or over its top speed is going to cause Bad Things to happen.

One could argue that firing a missile nearly always causes bad things to happen...

Not to the one firing them, unlike this case.

Yes, the AIM-54 Phoenix and AWG-9 radar for the F-14 began life as the AIM-47 Falcon for the YF-12A, the interceptor version of the A-12/SR-71.

The program evolved far enough for live test firing at Mach 3 before it was canceled.

Hey zaph, first of all awesome link to video. But got a question for ya. Why was the A12's nose so different shaped than the 71?

Didn't green flame already break that mark?

The A-12 wasn't, the YF-12 was. It had to fit the AN/ASG-18 fire control radar that the A-12 didn't require.

Interesting.

The shape of the YF-12A is different all around from the A12-OXCART. The YF looks like they chopped the nose off a SR-71 and modified it.

TR3B level pipe dream. Like methamphetamine pipe dream levels here. Won't matter anyway, like the 4th gen migs that precede it, it won't survive in contested airspace.

The YF added a second cockpit for the weapons officer, the AN/ASG-18 radar, plus some changes to allow for the weapons carriage, and release. The basic airframe from the top and from the cockpit back was the same.

This is a pretty cool line drawing of the differences between the different models.

green ladys not a fighter interceptor. Shes strictly in charge of delivering the mail and any high important messages in the event of a communications blackout. Sometimes they make her burn red on christmas eve and fly her across third world nations to give the kids hope

Wow. Never realized her rear was different too. Whats with that Zaph. Why'd the 12's have different backsides from the 71's?
