I'll give them this much: they found a concept uglier than the X-32.

(o.O)

You have to translate it but here is a graphic heavy page showing it.

They also show the fictional Mig 37 Ferret E

Haha, notice the "Sci-fi design series" on the bottom. That sounds about right.

Seems legit.

Here's a translation from google translate

A distinctive feature of the MiG-31 is that it is equipped with radar Barrier, making identification "flying radar" of the MiG-31. This radar can detect 24 targets at a distance of 200km. Computer systems on MiG-31 allows the pilot can choose the four most dangerous targets and direct air-to-air missile launch range to destroy.

With four remaining goals (MiG-31 can attack up to 8 targets at once) will be destroyed by air-to-air missile medium-range or short range, even the coordinates of the target can also be transmitted for the other fighters or anti-aircraft missile system on the ground.

Speeds that high, with a conventional aircraft, are expensive as hell. They're going to need a LOT of money for it.

If crude oil prices stay low, it'll never happen. The Russian economy is in poor shape now.

able to intercept even the hypersonic drones now being developed in the United States

Really? X-51A Waverider demonstrator and theoretical SR-72 = Mach 6, hypothetical MIG-41 = Mach 4.

Ya but if they are approaching each other even a pigeon is an interceptor.

At Mach 4+ it won't do much 'fighting'. Fighters have to be able to turn to fight.

Like Truebrit says, it will do Mach 4+, but of course, can also go slower...or else it could never land!

But, it will have the speed to outrun, catch and evade just about everything else in the sky, manned or not.

IF it comes off the drawing board of course.

I would have thought at such high speeds, the air in front of the fighter would form a high pressure / compressed zone far from the nose, and effective splatter any birds that are unlucky enough to get in front of it.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

Russia will go broke trying to design a "hypersonic" interceptor. I picture the nose cone melting and getting sucked into it's intake. Besides hypersonic is mach 5 not mach 4.

Now could america make a hypersonic interceptor if they really, really wanted to....... .........? ? ? ?

Not necessarily only a laser, so says the prophet of lasers. Its only good for line of sight and if you cannot close fast enough, even at Mach 4.1 chase is still a pretty long chase if they are far enough away and can do at least high subsonic. AND if they have a laser, then its also possibly dangerous.

Plus there are sure to be environmental conditions that make lasers less than ideal. What do you do if they drop below the cloud deck, for example?

I'd bet there will be some sort of long range, hypersonic missile. Might even be two stage: first hypersonic and the second hypermaneuverable.

Right now no one can. They still have the 8 minute barrier to solve.

psst.

Hypersonic missile in an LRSB. use off board targeting.

8 minutes at mach 10 is awesome far for a missile.

Would give it a 989 mile maximum stand off range. Every minute they can extend the 8 minute barrier would give you an extra 127 miles. Granted the missile was going mach 10 the whole time. But from 1000 miles away that missile will take out the chinese navy in 8 minutes.

Id take it one step farther id I were the USA though...... ........
