The USA is a socialist country, it's just that's it's been twisted to become more bureaucratic (Meaning bigger government) than it needs to and it's been twisted to favor big corporations over personal freedom.

Everyone on this thread wants (the modern, general population understanding of...) socialism. We want government to pay for public education for k-12, we want government to give us unemployment money when we get fired, we want a gaurnteed 40 hour work week, we want food stamps when we can't afford food, we want welfare when something happens to us, we want to be picked up by an ambulance and saved by an emergency room when we get hurt even if we can't afford that, we want government to pay for bridges and roads, we want government to pay for police and fire and military, we want to be able to retire and have the government pay for us to live after a certain age. YOu can lie, but you want this...otherwise, why do you live in the lower states. Move to Alaska in the wilderness where you can do everything for yourself.

That's just it. You want this, you want that, you would like this, you desire that, yet I see no indication that you or anyone else is willing to do anything in return. These things don't just fall out of the sky with sprinkles and rainbows.

I think the post you were responding to was making an accusation of something shameful (that wanting these things is shameful). I may be mistaken, but I recognized it as typical of the american conditioning to believe that actually wanting anything back in return from your government for the taxes you pay is bad- it means you are weak, stupid, immoral...

You are supposed to just pay them and not expect to have it come back to you in any form.

But anyway...
I see this accusation often that in the US currently, the people interested in more socialist type structure are ones who don't work, who intend to benefit from such a system without paying into it. I might be quick to believe that, except that I have a lot of family members in the US who are democrats/liberals, who want such programs, and strangely enough, they are NOT of the trailerpark/ welfare recipient type!

They are all pretty affluent, (some extremely so), successful, and highly educated. They are people who are not in need, but who feel they should and could help others. They are aware they'd be paying in probably more than they personally would be profitting from.

Granted, a large majority of these family members are teachers (high school and college), and a few are lawyers (immigration) so they might have more of a developed "social conscience" or helping, sort of attitude.

But that really makes me question the stereotype so often expressed, of people who are interested in such systems being lazy, selfish and greedy.

I pay thousands of dollars in Taxes every year. I think that gives me a right to say how I want that money spent.

Socialism has many good elements. It may need adjustments to make a more vibrant market.

Mainly it attempts to eradicate the extremes: too much wealth in the hands of a few, and the complete elimination of extreme poverty.

Those goals are noble.

Look at the world now where 62 individuals have half the worlds wealth!

And in America, a land of plenty and excess, there is still pockets of extreme poverty.

These are perversions of capitalism which need to be eliminated from the world.

No amount of anyone's wealth makes a difference in how anybody else lives.

Make a decent effort yourself, and live a good life as a result.

Who is rich or who is poor has zero to do with your effort and quality of life, or lack thereof for the lazy.

Want a good QOL ? Don't be lazy and figure out good from bad decisions. Not my problem, or anybody else's.

For anybody who can't physically work, or mentally / psychologically make decisions.....USA already has the most generous and gracious safety nets ever seen in the world, thanks to the largesse and charity of relatively uncorrupted capitalism over 240 years.

Anybody with any more socialism or communism than America....is going down the toilet.

Stop trying to emulate USSR, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, and the fast-failing europe. They've already had a chance to prove it works....guess what....it didn't, not once. Even your favorite nordic-scandanavian efforts are going down, thanks to suicidal social theories.

Like the Sweden or Norway? O wait they are doing better than the USA and infact most the world!

Sure 9/10 socialism fails and would likley fail if mich more was brought to the USA. It is not approriate for all/most countrys.

But SOME countrys have made it work and well.

fast-failing europe.

Europe is not one country.

Not all the EU countrys are failing and some are doing better than the USA. Only the ones who joined the Euro are.

Again bollocks.

The Scandinavian are having problems due to stupid immigration policies. A different issue. And they are far from going down.

Don’t know where you pull you bull# from but I recommend you go back to school and retake basic geography as you seem to know little to nothing about the world outside the USA.

Believe whatever you want, but it doesn't make it the truth. Absolute reality is not consensus driven.

Contrary to popular propaganda, Canada is NOT a country. It is a British colony just like Australia, new Zealand, Belize, etc.

Contrary to popular propaganda, what does that make USA then?

Regarding topic, I`m surprised how ignorant some people are on this forum. It`s like burn all the books that are not ours because it`s heresy....without even the slightest glance into it.

I don't know what it makes the USA, possibly the procurer of a lease from Britain? How much money does the US owe the bank of England, or England in general, after the treaties were signed? Was the mortgage on the midsection of North America ever paid off? Seems a few good "founders" may have purchased more than could ever be paid back in pursuit of a dream of freedom. Of course, where is that dream now?

Cheers - Dave
