is the " saving " in cargo hold volume really worth the drag , balance issues , fuel consumption , risk of damage etc etc etc

further - for stability and COG - would it not be better to carry an extra engine on each wing ??? - heck if the hardpoints // oylon mountings are there - just run fuel pipes and engine management looms in there too

one " brand new " engine - 6.25 hours only

This is a very rare situation, and yes, it really does save that much. The only other option, unless they want the plane grounded for several weeks, would be to charter a C-130, or larger aircraft depending on availability. Even with the extra fuel stop, and loss of cargo, they're saving a lot of money.
