Wow! I was just reading about that one... Our Weather Bureau's official line on that one is "that it was probably ball lightning."
The ABC news service even covered this one. Very interesting phenomenon.

Last year my partner and I saw something similar to what you describe. They were in the sky several nights in a row at around the same time each night.
They were bright, orange coloured "orbs" that looked just like flares ( i.e. looked like they were flaming) but they blinked off occasionally and re-formed in different formations. There were between 8 and 12 of them and were reported by hundreds of people. In the Mooloolaba area, very close to the commercial airport just off the coast.
The local newspaper covered it as well as the local ABC radio station.
No answer was even attempted by the authorities.
