Motherboard/Vice Interview of Peter Sunde (The Pirate Bay) "I have given up"

I wanted to see what people thought about his ideology and generally Open Community on the Internet.

It's a pretty important to note that Peter Sunde, 1 out of 3 founders of The Pirate Bay, who has fought for an Open Internet has stated that it's a lost cause.

His ideology that came out in this interview was really interesting. From what I take, he wants give in and hasten the collapse caused by corruption / mindless profiteers, which he amounts to (Extreme Capitalism) (He is swedish)

"So, how bad is the state of the open internet?

Well, we don’t have an open internet. We haven’t had an open internet for a long time. So, we can’t really talk about the open internet because it does not exist anymore. The problem is, nobody stops anything. We are losing privileges and rights all of the time. We are not gaining anything anywhere. The trend is just going in one direction: a more closed and more controlled internet. That has a big impact on our society. Because they are the same thing today. If you have a more oppressed internet, you have a more oppressed society. So that's something we should focus on.

But still we think of the internet like this new kind Wild West place, and things are not in chains yet, so we don’t care because everything will be OK anyhow. But that is not really the case. We have never seen this amount of centralization, extreme inequality, extreme capitalism in any system before. But according to the marketing done by people like Mark Zuckerberg and companies like Google, it's all to help with the open network and to spread democracy, and so on. At the same time, they are capitalistic monopolies. So it’s like trusting the enemy to do the good deeds. It is really bizarre."

Then Later :

"Well, I think, to win the war, we first of need to understand what the fight is and for me it’s clear that we are dealing with ideological thing: extreme capitalism that’s ruling, extreme lobbying that’s ruling and the centralization of power. The internet is just a part of a bigger puzzle."

"Look at all the biggest companies in the world, they are all based on the internet. Look at what they are selling: nothing. Facebook has no product. Airbnb, the biggest hotel chain in the world, has no hotels. Uber, the biggest taxi company in the world, has no taxis whatsoever."

It's the next step in capitalism, make your employee fund the materials for your business to run. Really, it's not all too different from a decade ago when I worked as a delivery driver for a company. The company advertised deliveries but they had no car to do so. It was my car that made the deliveries, my fuel that got the car there and back, my maintenance costs that kept the car running. None of that was included in my wage (which was about $5/hour after tips) but if I wanted a job, those were the terms.

Airbnb and Uber are just the next evolution of that.

Part of this is why I find 3d printing, and augmented reality like the Windows 10 Holo Lens to be so interesting. They're ways to take digital materials and make something physical out of them. Shapeways for example is an absolutely brilliant website.

The main issue I have with something like Pirate Bay is that I assume it's an actual company and they make money by facilitating the trading of copyrighted material.

I never did really see the big deal with taking a CD that you bought and making a thousand copies and giving them to a thousand people for free. Whatever the law says about it, it's just a law that doesn't make sense. And laws need to make sense to the common person.

So you have this computer sitting in your house and a zillion other people have computers just like it and someone can buy a CD or a DVD or whatever the hell it is and their computer can make a copy of this and send it out to however many people for free. But the catch is that it apparently needs a tracker and various other technical resources that have to be maintained constantly. That is not free. Somebody has to pay for the infrastructure. That means whoever that is has to make money somehow. So they are basically selling copyrighted material. Now that makes sense why the copyright holder would have a legitimate gripe with those people.

But eventually (or maybe already, I don't know) there will be some file sharing scheme that doesn't need an entity like TPB in order to make it happen. Then what? Are they going to prosecute ISPs because they know their customers are using the internet to trade free stuff?

The funny/weird/strange/irrational thing is a lot of this highly disputed copyrighted material that goes through these wires was made by people who are ideologically Marxist. Even their material is often heavily Marxist in it's themes. And now they're upset because they can't survive (financially) selling their anti-capitalist crap to the masses as long as the masses are taking one copy and making a thousand for free.

This is basically THE argument against socialism. Without profit, you don't have much to work with. The idea that people are going to work themselves to a nub just for the greater good is a nice idea but it falls apart quickly in practice.

You see it in the torrents. Most people don't seed longer than they have to. If you see a torrent that has a thousand uploaders you're seeing a torrent a lot of people want and the pieces are available because they're downloading. But most of those people will drop off instantly as soon as they finish downloading. Why? Because seeding is hard work and that defeats the purpose of free stuff.

I can't take anything a Swedish person says with any amount of seriousness. As a people they are so brainwashed by liberalism that it's literally destroying their country. Both economically (they can't afford their socialist policies anymore) and culturally (the mass number of muslim immigrants raping and pillaging their country).

Then this guy talking about capitalism being a product of an oppressed society and destroying the internet. WTF is he babbling about? A free society would have an unregulated economy which would be capitalist. A regulated economy (like in a socialist state) would be the product of an oppressed society. IMO this is probably a mentality he shares with most Swedes, judging by the state of their country.

Maybe he should walk outside and try to come up with ideas to fix his own country before tackling the larger problems of the world. Moron.
