A new report is saying that Army doctors aided in the torture of detainees in detention centers including the one at Abu Ghraib. In violation of the Geneva convention, the doctors allegedly gave interrogators patient medical files. The report states this all allegedly happened, but goes on to say that concluding that doctors helped with torture is premature.

US army doctors apparently helped intelligence officers carry out abusive interrogations at military detention centres, perhaps participating in torture, a report by New England Journal of Medicine claimed.

Medical personnel helped tailor interrogations to the physical and mental conditions of individual detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the report, in its Wednesday's edition, alleged.

Alleging that doctors violated their professional ethics and the Geneva Conventions, it said that medical workers gave interrogators access to patient medical files, and that psychiatrists and other physicians collaborated with interrogators and guards who, in turn, deprived detainees of sleep, restricted them to diets of bread and water and exposed them to extreme heat and cold.

The Pentagon says that the report is innacurate and went on to say that some doctors participated as consultants - but nothing more. I imagine that tailoring interrogation tactics to psycho-analysis of that person is pretty standard operating practices.

This is an extract of the report, The New England Journal of Medicine is a subscriber site.

NEJM
When military forces go into combat, they are typically accompanied by medical personnel (physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and medics) who serve in noncombat roles. These professionals are bound by international law to treat wounded combatants from all sides and to care for injured civilians. They are also required to care for enemy prisoners and to report any evidence of abuse of detainees. In exchange, the Geneva Conventions protect them from direct attack, so long as they themselves do not become combatants.

Recently, there have been accounts of failure by U.S. medical personnel to report evidence of detainee abuse, even murder, . . .

As significant on a professional level for any doctor who participated in torture or atrocities, how does it fit with their undertaking of the Hippocratic oath?

More and more atrocities will come out as days go by, and as the news sips littler by littler, we are becoming numb to all of them.

All the allegations as they expand to covert more and more people we are starting to see, that is was all planned approved and directed by our administration.

What a shame.

I didn't get the same gist as others apparently...

it looks like the doctors are merely doing there jobs of checking on prisoners condition... (maybe they didn't ask the right questions...."where did that bruise come from?")
but saying they were guilty of doing anything wrong, is akin to saying the red cross was involved for inspecting the prisoners also

and yes there was abuse at ABU G...
It wasn't nearly what the media make it out to be... but neverless, GOLDEN RULE...
we would not want our soldiers beaten to death...
but strip them and put muslim flags all over them if you want... hell even make em play twister if ya want... At least they would come home in one piece...

the only part i had a problem with was the physical damage inflicted upon the prisoners... Otherwise... works for me... I would HOPE that all that our soldiers made prisoners would have it that good.

Wrong. What the media have had access to through leaked images is a small part of the sorry picture. The abuses were far worse than what has surfaced.
