In a bombshell report, Pulitzer prize winning investigative journalist Sy Hersh claims simultaneously that the United States indirectly has funded the rise of ISIS to overthrow Bashir Assad, while top level brass in the US military has tried undermining the Obama administration's aim of overthrowing Assad!

His claim is that former joint chief's of staff general Martin Dempsey sent intelligence to various countries, Russia, Germany etc., to be given to Assad about US funding of Syrian Rebels trying to overthrow him.

"President Obama’s top military commander secretly orchestrated intelligence sharing with military leaders in Germany, Israel and Russia to thwart the president’s policy to remove Bashar Assad from power in Syria and lay the groundwork for Russia’s military entrance into the Syrian civil war, because he believed Obama’s anti-ISIS strategies were hopelessly misguided."

So it seems the US military is concerned about the rise of ISIS and radical Islamists in Syria, yet the Obama administration continues funding them. There's somewhat of a power struggle within the US government.

Hersh also claims Turkey is aiding ISIS in a bid to become a regional Sunni Superpower.

"Hersh, whose sources include top senior aides to the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, which commands all U.S. military forces, also described in great detail how Turkey’s president Recep Erdoğan has deceived the White House by siding and arming ISIS and other extremist Islamic militias in Syria, in a gambit for Turkey to emerge as a regional power akin to the Ottoman Empire."

Add the fact that it was Rebels who used the chemical weapons in Syria, which was blamed on Assad. It's beginning to unravel BIG time.

Obama could have went into Syria when the chemical weapon red line was crossed. He didnt need ISIS to do it.

So this article states that military brass have been undermining Obama to SAVE the Assad regime? I am confused. It seems to me that Obama has let a number of reasons to invade Syria fall by the weigh side. Why would he do that if he is so bent on removing Assad.

This article is like a twilight zone episode on opposite land.

Obama is working off a COVERT OPERATION so he has to try to overthrow Assad….that’s what is in the finding of the CO.

It isn’t about going to war with Syria just subverting them so Assad will fall.

The COVERT OPERATION is run by the CIA and state department, that’s why the Army doesn’t have to be in on it and can go against it surreptitiously

Also, Obama knows he was deceived by Hillary on the Libyan war so he may be trying to overthrow Assad with little skin in the game

BTW, thanks to the OP for the heads up to this article

This is a great article and another indication of the factualism within the US government.
(Seymour Hirsch is practically the only MSM journalist along with Glen Greenwald who tells some truth)

Obama doesn’t want to take a hold of his own government probably because he’s scared one of these factions will be pissed at him so he is trying to just do a little of everything and thereby getting nothing done.

James Corbett and Sybil Edmonds cover another aspect to keep in mind . It could help explain some of the confusion we are all experiencing in trying to make sense of Syria/etc etc...
It could also cause more confusion as well so grab a salt shaker ..

Interesting article about Mr. Hersh...

Seymour Hersh: conspiracy theorist or ground-breaking iconoclast?

However, uppermost in most people’s minds when judging his claims about the death of Bin Laden are his most recent major allegation: that the Syrian rebels, not President Bashar al-Assad, conducted the chemical weapons attack on eastern Damascus in August 2013 that killed hundreds of men, women and children, and that Washington knew this and hid it.
That story, like the Bin Laden account, was published in the London Review of Books - in two versions - after being rejected by the New Yorker, Mr Hersh’s normal employer.
Journalists specialising in the region accused Mr Hersh of ignoring other reporting, including video evidence of regime troops firing missiles similar to those used to deliver the sarin.

His two versions, also, were contradictory - despite both supposedly having come from Pentagon sources privy to the same information.
One said that the sarin was made by a former Iraqi army chemical weapons expert who had defected to al-Qaeda, the other that it was supplied by Turkey.
Critics make the same point about the Syria and the Bin Laden stories - that they are derived from anonymous sources whose credentials cannot be checked.

Being a Pulitzer prize winner doesn't mean you can't write BS.

And contradicting yourself doesn't help your claims one bit.

And then there is this ...."How Criticism Of Hersh's New Piece Fails To Understand What Really Happened "

The latest Seymour Hersh piece alleges that the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) under General Dempsey undermined the official White House policy on Syria. Their impetus to do so came after a Defense Intelligence Agency analysis found in 2012 that there were hardly any "moderate rebels" in Syria but only Islamists fighting against the Syrian state. The CIA was at least since early 2012 delivering weapons from Libya to Turkey as well as through other routes. The U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens was killed on September 11 2012 in Benghazi over some issues with the weapon transfers. Once in Turkey those weapons, as well as plane loads of others purchased by Qatar and Saudi Arabia, were given to "moderate rebels" who took them into Syria. There they sold off at least part of every weapon and ammunition haul to the Islamists terror gangs which were, and still are, financed by the Wahhabi Gulf states. A new BBCRadio4 report by Peter Oborne explains in detail how that scheme works.

It wasn't just Hersh who claims the sarin attack was from the rebels...

Attack the messenger and not the message. Fallible tactic to discredit an argument.

"Carla del Ponte, a member of the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told Swiss TV there were “strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof,” that rebels seeking to oust Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad had used the nerve agent."

www.washingtontimes.com...

"A team of security and arms experts, meeting this week in Washington to discuss the matter, has concluded that the range of the rocket that delivered sarin in the largest attack that night was too short for the device to have been fired from the Syrian government positions where the Obama administration insists they originated.

Separately, international weapons experts are puzzling over why the rocket in question – an improvised 330mm to 350mm rocket equipped with a large receptacle on its nose to hold chemicals – reportedly did not appear in the Syrian government’s declaration of its arsenal to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and apparently was not uncovered by OPCW inspectors who believe they’ve destroyed Syria’s ability to deliver a chemical attack."

You do know that Colonel Wilkerson isn't new to making things up...

I can tell you that having been intimately involved in the preparation of Secretary Powell for his five February 2003 presentation at the UN Security Council, neither of those dissents in any fashion or form were registered with me or the Secretary by the DCI, George Tenent, by the DDCI, John McLaughlin, or by any of their many analysts who were in the room with us for those five, six days and nights at the Central Intelligence Agency.

I’d believe Seymour Hersch over the usual Zionist puppet media any day of the week!

In the MSM all you get is Assad this, Assad that from both liberals and conservatives and that loathsome Hillary Clinton and her puppets, as well John McCain.

The same garbage as when they on orders wrote anything they could get to murder Khadafy and when they supinely took everything the government said before the Iraq disaster that started all this mess

The MSM is complicit. They are guilty. They are liars. They are the lowest of the low.

....That’s one e thing all factions in American politics can agree on

Seymour Hersch is one of the only independent MS journalists around and the one of the few we can get some truth from

It's not the first time the US armed both sides of a conflict. During the Iran-Iraq War, the US gave weapons to both Iran (via Iran-Contra affair) and Iraq.

They not only set up arms for every one but they provide a pretty good propaganda program as well . There are some good comments with good past programs doing the same old same old .

US Military Spokesperson In Iraq Circulates Fake Islamic State Document As Genuine

It seems that the U.S. military is propagandizing against the Islamic State by distributing fake Islamic State documents. This, in effect, will make the Islamic State look better than it is.

What an excellent report that is linked in that truth-out.org page from the OP!

Will be digging through it that much is for sure. All the points that you have listed really are quite self evident in the actual events that have unfolded on the ground.

We can only hope that this internal divide within the Pentagon and our various intelligence agencies will result in a drastic change in our criminal foreign policy.

Perhaps you could attempt to address the material covered in the OP or simply move along.

It comes as no surprise that anything that is critical of the west, will result in your immediate dismissal as BS.

Seymour Hersh's credentials speaks for themselves, regardless of your bias!

The indictment of Bergdahl proves that something is up.

After that Rose Garden Clusterpluck with his parents.

The Whitehouse certainly didn't want a Military Trial for desertion.

I always felt the Osama Bin Laden raid & killing was a concocted farce, not only put on for the public but the president as well as an unwitting participant, the elected face to make it all seem legitimate . At this point the Pentagon is the shadow government dictating the direction of this country through the use of false narratives. 9/11 was the stepping off point, once they took that route no false flag or level of deception was too sinister.

We got Ben Swann here on ATS who issued something similar half a year ago. Does anyone knows if he will show up again or was it just a one-shot ?

I'm less and less convinced that the US President is really in charge of the US ...
The pentagon clearly had a greater influence on the recent US foreign policy than the White House.
