Well, to be devils advocate, comets are part of what brought water to the earth, so they didn't just burn up. Asteroids did as well and the water on/in them had to have stayed there in order to have made it to earth as well.

Tell that to Jupiter and see what response you get. If my memory serves me correctly some of the scares from SML9 were larger than the earth.
