I really don't understand how anyone can argue and support this?

A "conservative" utopia would look much more like Nazi Germany than a "liberal" utopia.

There is a reason the American Nazi Party identifies and considers themselves "conservative".

For the longest time in America, liberals and Democrats were branded as communists. Far-left communists.

Then at some point, the far-right has been playing a projection game, flipping everything around 180 degrees to accuse others of being exactly what they are. What happened to accusing liberals and Democrats of being evil communists?

The liberals and Democrats started calling out the conservatives for their xenophobic, hyper-militaristic, imperialistic, nationalistic ways. Apparently the Republicans and conservatives didn't like w hat they say in the mirror and had a serve reaction, sparking denial and cognitive dissonance.

Add to that that the cold war ended. We're not longer at war with communism. Terrorism is now the new enemy, so communists aren't as scary to the American people. Most people in their 20's and 30's don't even remember what the cold war was like. Hell, people in the 40's and 50s barley can remember McCarthyism and the "red scare". Nope, that won't really work either.

It blows my mind at the absolute revisionist and selective lenses people can look through, just because they can't possibly be wrong. It's a black and white world, remember? It's either up or down, good or bad, right or wrong.

Trust me, you don't live in the Matrix, and the program won't crash if you're wrong.

The first problem when approaching this particular issue is that there is a language barrier. Certain terms and phrases may appear to say one thing when viewed through our modern understanding of them. But they were used in different ways and meant something a bit different back then.

One example would be the word socialism.

People see the word socialism in the name of the Nazi party, National Socialist German Workers' Party, and assume that the word "socialist" is used with the same meaning as we believe today. But it's more complicated than that. It would be better if you understood how it was applied by those that lived back then.

The Nazi ideology was based on "Volksgemeinschaft". It means a community of people. A unified nation. A union. That is the context in which the term "socialist" is used. It's more applicable to ultra-nationalism than it is to actual socialism. You have to remember that socialism is an economic and political model. Very little of which was incorporated by the Nazis.

Anyway, you have to better understand the differences in terminology between the 1930's and 2015 to better understand Nazis, fascism and socialism.

Hmm, NO !

Socialism then meant exactly the same thing as today. Sorry to slay your idol/sacred cow

The Nazis, or the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei was an evolution of the German Worker's party.

It was absolutely left wing.

Google "Strasser", the leader of the SA part of the Nazis, who was even more left wing, advocating for total state control of all industry, specifically labelling himself "anti-capitalist" e.g. absolute communist in anything but name. He was assasinated by other Nazis because he was too far left, even for them

Hitler himself decried "bourgeois" lifestyle/societies

The battle between communists and Nazis for control of Germany in the 30s was an internal battle among leftists.

Socialism
Don't let 100+ years of FAILURE and TENS of Millions of DEAD people get in the way of your "utopia"

"it's different this time"....right....

I can fully imagine how government control can seem oppressive and often it actually is oppressive, but sadly the majority of people seem to be in need of this kind of guidance, the alternative is anarchy. I am all for peaceful anarchy, but that is just a very rare thing, at leas on a national scale and bigger. I appreciate the sentiment, but greatly wonder what you would do instead? Benevolent dictatorship maybe? en.wikipedia.org...

What's wrong with identifying as being human, of planet Earth?

When the individual loses their identity to the collective.

Say hello to fascism.

Say hello to communism.

Say hello to socialism.

So...what are you, a "thing" not a human of planet Earth?

Please explain to me how your individualism would be lost? This is some seriously high drama, and my eyes rolling sound like two boulders scraping the Earth.

Truth is it all depends on which one of these you want to believe.

Both left AND right can be fascist.

People attribute to as only the RIGHT.

That is a misnomer.

Keep on shaming the people who died during the fascist vs socialist wars on the 20th century, trying to change the definition of a word is not that easy.

Pictures and memes wont change the definition of a word, the thread is about the word fascism, and if its a right wing style of government.

Ad yes it still is.

Hihi you made me think of those meme pictures.

What the... think I do
What the.... Think I do
What I actually do and so on.

I think the OP in essence wishes to point out that people more often than not do not make the distinction between what people thought they were getting into and what actually transpired, but that message is getting a little skewed or is going sideways because it is clear he has some kind of axe to grind with socialism in general.

That is what I think

What makes the differences/contrasts in government is the authoritarian policies necessary for a government's "success".

The more authority needed to keep a population in check is the problem.

Genuine Conservatives (not the Left Wing definitions of "Conservatives") don't rely or condone massive oppressive authoritarian policies.

Read Marx and figure it out.

I like that chart. At first I couldn't figure out why it had republicans (national) as a restrictive ideology but it makes sense now that I think about it. On a national level for instance we do want secure borders and a strong military - which means somewhat less freedom of travel (for immigrants, anyway) and drafts during war time.

Funny where it puts "Center". I think the vast majority of people alive in the US don't have a clue what being "Center" is. Or elsewhere, for that matter.

I agree on a scale where fascism is on one end and anarchy is on the other, conservatives would be closer to anarchy because they want limited government, and liberals would be closer to fascism because they want bigger government. Neither can they argue with that - everything that comes out of their mouth means more regulations and less Constitutional rights. Gun control, carbon emission regulations, insurance mandates, tax burdens, political correctness, common core, the sick bastards even legislate religious ceremony (like marriage) while daring to speak "separation of church and state" out the other side of their mouths. The list goes on forever.

Our country needs to return to it's conservative roots.

Things would at least be a lot more straight forward, i will give you that. There is a reason why I enjoy watching all kind of post apocalyptic stuff. I just have this hope that this organized way of governance how flawed it may be to so many, may lead to the technological singularity that will make the whole discussion anarchy versus gov obsolete. So yeah lawful good here on the D&D scale.

As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality.[quote]

I don't believe we have ever conversed before. So let start by saying hi.

Hi.

As for your post, I said earlier that this issue is much more complicated than simply reading the words used at that time, applying our current understanding, and being able to tell the exact context of what was meant. It's like modern man looking at Egyptian hieroglyphics, seeing a symbol that looks like a UFO or a helicopter and coming to the conclusion that the Egyptians hung-out with aliens and they had helicopters to fly around in.

We view things, and understand things, based on what we know through our current paradigm. There is a reason why smart people study this topic for years to come to the conclusions they have. The consensus among researchers and historians is that the Nazi was a right-wing ideology. They don't simply base their opinion on superficial facts. It's based on research and context.

Also, there is economic information that shows the Nazis were funded and supported by anti-communists and capitalists. That would include Henry Ford and J Edgar Hoover.

As a last piece of info, did you know that Einstein was very vocal that he was a socialist and vowed to always be so because he never wanted to become what the Nazis became?
