The Pentagon's portion of a USD1.15 trillion government spending bill released by Congress on 16 December contains USD300 million for competitive development of an Unmanned Carrier Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) air vehicle.

Congress has said that the navy should develop a penetrating, air-refuellable UCLASS capable of performing a broad range of missions in a non-permissive environment.
