Can someone explain what the karma score means under one's screen name?

I haven't been able to figure out the karma score either, which is probably why it's called the "oddly calculated karma score" when you hover over it.

It's some sort of algorithm which determines it, a combination of how often a member posts comments compared to how many stars + flags they receive.
