ZOMBIES...(really???)

So what is it with Zombies anyway? Some 60's throwback, 'B' movie show, or is it something else?

I think it's something else.

There's something to be learned from the whole "Zombie" genre.

You see, zombies are the most vanilla, politically correct, non-offensive, enemy there is. The whole 'zombie' thing is likely one of the best marketing and psychological successes ever imagined.

You cannot persecute a zombie, you can't offend one; you can murder one, but no one cares. Zombies don't have a religion, they don't have an ideology. You can't hurt a zombie's feelings. They don't have any feelings. It doesn't matter if a zombie is white, brown, black, yellow or red...the only good zombie is a dead one. You can torture a zombie if you want to waste your time, but you're doing just that...wasting your time.

There are no zombie activist groups, no one cares where a zombie rides on the bus. Zombies are the perfect test case for any discussion. Zombies don't exist. Zombies don't have a political agenda, zombies don't vote. No one is going to be offended if you round up a bunch of zombies and kill them....zombies don't matter.

The "zombie" thing is BRILLIANT!

There's a deeply psychological meaning in the whole zombie genre...I just wonder if people see it for what it is.

Zombies are a metaphor for the violence in all of us...zombies are beautiful.

Modern zombies (The era that began with Romeo's Night of the Living Dead) began as a critique on modern society and consumerism.

Since then it's evolved to tell one story or another, either offering a narrative or making a statement on society in one fashion or another to just playing directly into our primal fears.

Regardless, it's rather funny that it's become such a commodity in today's society from the anti-consumerism piece it began with. I'm not complaining, however, as I'm a glutton for most of it.

Zombies technically are a way to dehumanize people and have been used recently in drills to represent controlling and killing masses of people.

As an aside, why Zombies as opposed to any other mythical creature? (Vampires, werewolves, mummies etc.) Capacity for rational thought I would guess...though I seem to recall a few "smart" zombie films as well

Actually if you watched the walking dead I believe there was a little girl who kept trying to befriend the zombies...fortunately she does become a liability and gets shot in the end...so yay?

Actually, I'm not so convinced. There's a fundamental difference between zombies vs. aliens, vampires and monsters.

Aliens, vampires and monsters, although powerful in portrayal, do not exist in overwhelming numbers. The mindset with aliens, vampires and mosters is to defeat them; the mindset with zombies is completely different. Zombies can't be 'defeated', there's too many of them...they just keep coming. Survival against zombies is a defensive effort, not an offensive one; an inward looking effort as opposed to an outward looking one. The zombies are the vast majority, and survivors are the microscopic minority. It's a completely different perspective.

To me zombies represent political correctness and socialism taken to its logical inevitability, albeit extreme. The "survivors" are the only ones left who can think for themselves and be independent. The mindless zombies are controlled by a cruel and unseen power.

Just think for a moment about the abstract irony of how one kills a zombie; the only way to kill one is to kill what's left of its brain. In other words, only those left who can think must completely destroy what's left of the brains of those who cannot. The irony contained in just that thought alone shouldn't go unnoticed.

So with that thought I will make a prediction. My prediction is, it won't be long before the socialist left begin advocating for the banning of the whole 'zombie' genre (in film, books and gaming). They will do this under the guise of eliminating "violence for the sake of violence", but that won't be the real reason. The real reason will be the 'zombie' genre represents a threat; the message is all wrong, they can't have the masses being perceived as the bad-guys and the survivors being the good-guys. Independence and self sufficiency is a bad thing in their eyes, and it defeats their purpose (not to mention their gravy train).
