Despite strict populations controls, China welcomed its 1.3 billionth citizen today. The baby boy was born in the capital of Beijing. Chinese officials have pointed out that had their controls not been in place, this event would have occurred four years earlier. The population is expected to keep growing by about 10 million a year until well into the 2030's.

BEIJING (AFP) - China's 1.3 billionth citizen, a baby boy, was born at a hospital in the capital, it was reported.

According to the official Xinhua news agency Zhang Weiqing, minister in charge of the State Population and Family Planning Commission, awarded the newborn a certificate designating him as the 1.3 billionth citizen.

The event, "might have come four years earlier if it were not for the family planning policy the Chinese government adopted more than three decades ago," Xinhua said.

The baby's mother Lan Hui, 31, works for Shell China while the father Zhang Tong, 37 works for Air China.

The huge population is putting pressure on already insufficient natural resources and jobs.

That is a lot of mouths to feed and the figures are for the mainland and does not include Hong Kong or Macau. As bad as their issues are going to get regarding feeding such a large population, factor in the growing disparity between male and females and numbers may trend down sooner than projected. India also has a bourgeoning population without the draconian controls that China has. At some point their population will surpass that of China with half the land mass.

As much as i am against Communistic [or any other type of] authoritarianism,
Limiting birth rates may be the difference between civilization and degeneration into barbarism.

Kudos to the Chinese government on this issue.

Now if the rest of the world would get a clue.

Are you referring to India, Africa, who?...also, China needs stricter population control. Its rediculous that they have over 4 times the population as the US, but the US has more land then them.

10 million a year is still way to high, they should give more money to the people who have no kids, or only one kid. Hopefully it would be enough of an essentive to have people not have kids.

I did an ATSNN story on it a while back. They are facing huge shortages that is threating thier ability to grow food. in addition, pollution is becoming a major issue and alot of water is contaminated.

Actually, their population is bnound to drop as the preference for male children are skewing thier numbers so badly that there is already a shortage of females.
