The whole process of selection is basically divided into three parts
phase1 fitness, and navagation
phase 2 jungle training
phase 3 combat survival
Fitness and navagation
The first part of selection is held in the mountains of South Wales, mostly in the Brecon Beacons. The wealther there can change quickly. A couple of soldiers have died there mainly due to hypothermia. This first stage is where most men don't succeed. It's more of a rejection then a selection. In four week's there is a build up to test week and the endurance march. The first two weeks for officers and three weels for non officers is a build up training period since some applicants can't read maps and can not navigate. Those who fail selection are returned to their mothern unit. After the first stage continuation training starts. Detailed relaistic training in weapons handling, demolition, small patrol tactics for over one month. The first week is mostly runs in the neighbourhood, up and down hills with a small load in the Bergen. As time goes on you gradually go farther and have heavier loads, the long drag or endurance is the ultimate test. About 60 60 KM over the mountains in less than 20 hours of time with a load in your bergen.
Jungle Training
A very important next stage is the jungle. Six weeks in the green hell without a shower or shave. Divided in to groups of four, watched over day and night by the directing staff, every man is thorougly tested. After lesson's in navagation, jungle, and contact drills, there is a final test where all the thing's they learned they need to apply here. The actual selection starts with the standard battle fitness test, a 2.5 KM run in under 13 minutes, and the same distance in ran alone in 11.5 min.
Okay combat survival is basically SERE training you have to learn to live of the land and resist and escape from the enemy which are mostly ghurkas, and para's. Also they go through in interrogation training in which they are put through 48 hours of being forced to be in stressful positions, and interrogated constantly.
I think the SAS's strong point's are in fighing in very hot, and very cold places, also I think they would do vey=ry good in mountain warfare.
The SAS use the M16 as their assault rifle, they use the Heckler and Koch MP5 submachine guns for counter-terrorist dutie's. They use the P226 semi-automatic pistol for personal protection, for their general purpose machine gun they use the gimpy it has a effective range of 1,800 yards and a maximum rate of fire of 750 RPM. For their heavy machine gun they use the Browning 50 caliber .
