Looks like Russian is getting ready to take down NATO or Turkey planes that try to interfere, should be interesting to where this goes.

Russian Su-34 bombers, additionally equipped with air-to-air missiles, have set out on their first mission in Syria, said Igor Klimov, spokesman for the Russian Air Force.

“Today, Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers have made their first sortie equipped not only with high explosive aviation bombs and hollow charge bombs, but also with short- and medium-range air-to-air missiles," Klimov said.

"The planes are equipped with missiles for defensive purposes," he added.

The missiles have target-seeking devices and are “capable of hitting air targets within a 60km radius,” he said.

Turkish F-16s shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber operating in Syria on November 24, with Ankara claiming that the warplane had violated Turkish airspace. Moscow has rejected the claims, saying that according to its military intelligence the Su-24 never left Syrian airspace.

On Monday, Turkey's prime minister said that Ankara will not apologize for the incident.

"No Turkish prime minister or president will apologize ... for doing our duty," Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters after meeting NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels.

In the wake of the downing, President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed a decree imposing a package of economic sanctions against Turkey. The measures include banning several Turkish organizations and the import of certain goods. Under the sanctions, the visa-free regime for Turkish nationals traveling to Russia will be suspended starting next year. The Russian government has also been tasked with introducing a ban on charter flights between Russia and Turkey and to enhance security control at Russian ports on the Sea of Azov and Black Sea.

Russia has been conducting airstrikes targeting Islamic State militants (IS, former ISIS, ISIL) and other terrorist groups in Syria since September 30. The strikes were launched after a formal request from Damascus. Russian jets have been carrying out sorties from Moscow’s Khmeimim Air Base in Latakia.

On Thursday, Moscow recalled its military representative from Turkey. At the same time Russian Defense Ministry said that all channels of military cooperation with Ankara were suspended including a hotline set up to share information about Russian airstrikes in Syria.

One things for sure, Russia ain't gonna stop beefing up it's operation against ISIS, and the rest of the world should be thankful that Russia is doing this to get rid of a terrorist network which involves Turkey.

God forbid whatever outcome we can expect from all this escalations...

Well, let's hope Russia don't violate Turkish airspace again. He who fires first tends to win.

How?

Russia wouldn't survive a fight with NATO...and they know it.

Turkey is one of the top 10 military's in the world...they could hold their own for a while.

The thing is Turkey is not intimidated by Russia one bit...as Russia likes to be the bully on the block.

And Russia hopefully knows the consequences of any action they take with those Air to Air missiles.

The people Russia is supposed to be fighting against do not have jets, and even if they did it wouldn't be in the air for long.

You have that backwards Russian has more advanced small arms tech than any other country,no one has yet reproduced their silent ammunition successfully(eliminates need for a suppressor),their Tsar bomb,or having armor piercing +P+ ammo as the standard for their handguns and SMG's that would ruin most any other weapon if used in other than the Russians weapons, that is all tech from the early eighties or older, now they are even more advanced.

So what? Turkey would be fighting a defensive war at home. They could hold out a long time. Russia would be fighting an aggressive war at a distance, with plenty of opportunities for their lines of supply and communication to be severed. How would you feel if the Moskva were sunk, Crimea starved, and thousands of Russians died without Turkey showing the least inclination to surrender? Couple that with more terrorist bombings aimed at Russian civilians. Do you think Putin is prepared to take that chance?

I don't care for either of them.

If they flattened each other, I'd just roll over and go back to sleep.....

I am interested to know how an advance anti-air system can be sunk, if not from the air, I bet the Russians now very well about that given their strategic placement of the s-400 basically covering a majority of Syrian airspace. Good luck to Turks going past that...With SU-35's scouring the skies.

It's not as easy as it may seem, to take out the prized Moskva..

Putin is use to playing poker at the hi-stakes table and he is damn good at it.

I am sure if the US had Strike Eagles flying the border we would hang something on the hard points besides bombs from the beginning. The USAF would defiantly have combat air patrol flying top cover for the bombers.

HUH!? small arms? really? Turkey is a horrible place to fight not to mention a possible two front war. You'll need way more then small arms ,which btw didn't help much during the war with Afghanistan.

Honestly, This really threatens Russia's operation in Syria

Exactly, The US learned the hard way, back in the 40's that bombers don't last long in a fighter envirment with out cover.
