Or maybe they're setting things up for me
future presidential campaign. Muahahahaha!
In all honesty, it's going to be a lot harder than just a simple "who will voters turn to?"-type of scenario. The truth is, both major political
parties have a stranglehold on State & federal elections and they work together to keep it that way. Redistricting/gerrymandering, deadlines, & weird
requirements are specifically set up to prevent 3rd parties from gaining any real traction. I think those barriers will have to be reduced before we
can truly think about having an independent candidate.
I can give a good example from the left wing. Many of the "left wing" organizations, forums, and websites aren't "left wing" at all; they're
"Democratic". As in, they forbid campaigning for 3rd parties, advocating independent progressive parties, etc, regardless of how progressive or
liberal they are (unless they're aligned with the Dems). The popular sites "DailyKos" and "Democratic Underground/DU have these requirements to an
extent, as does the fundraising platform "Act Blue". And this isn't just because of the site administrators; the users are in agreement about this.
Or to put it another way, how many of these Bernie "fans" gave a crap about him last year? Or 3 years ago? Or 8 years ago? He'd still be irrelevant on
the national level right now
if he didn't decide to run for President as a Democrat. He's certainly not the only Socialist in the US & he's not
even a hardcore socialist, as some socialist groups will gladly tell you. But that's the point; there are plenty of other people out here with
policies similar to his. And virtually no voters here can name them because they simply don't care about 3rd party candidates or politicians.
People like to say they care about independent candidates, but they always either refuse to vote or pick the lesser of 2 evils when given a choice. If
people could get past that mental hurdle, we could start electing more independent candidates right now.
