RCMP boss wants warrantless access to online subscriber information

I say – what’s good for the goose is good for the gander then. Imagine how fine and outstanding members of the community police officers would strive to be if there was uninhibited public access to their home address and internet activity. It should be an acceptable condition of the job. So no more encrypted transmissions, full public access to email, internet activity, conduct reports, location logs, etc. Let’s see who the real criminals turn out to be.

OTTAWA - RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson says the police force needs warrantless access to Internet subscriber information to keep pace with child predators and other online criminals.

Police say telecommunications companies and other service providers — such as banks and rental companies — now demand court approval for nearly all types of requests from authorities for basic identifying information.

In June last year, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled police must have a judge's authorization to obtain customer data linked to online activities.

The Supreme Court judgment came amid mounting public concern about authorities quietly gaining access to customer information with little oversight.

Any reasonable judge is going to grant them access to the necessary information anyway, that is what the system is in place for. So why are they so anxious to circumvent it??

Easy.

Instead of using a judge to get a specific person's records after suspicion, they want to pro actively "search" everyone's activity to "find" people to go after.

Figures, and I'm not surprised the rcmp are going to try and implement more measures to keep track of everyone even more than they already do.

Anyone hear of the global police force initiative Montreal (Quebec) police have implemented ?

Of course it's to help coordinate with other forces better so they can track down suspects more quickly, but it all starts somewhere doesn't it ?
