Turkey downs warplane near Syria border, Russia denies airspace violation

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish fighter jets shot down a Russian-made warplane near the Syrian border on Tuesday after repeatedly warning it over air space violations, Turkish officials said, but Moscow said it could prove the jet had not left Syrian air space.

Turkish presidential sources said the warplane was a Russian-made SU-24. The Turkish military, which did not confirm the plane's origin, said it had been warned 10 times in the space of five minutes about violating Turkish airspace.

Russia's defence ministry said one of its fighter jets had been downed in Syria, apparently after coming under fire from the ground, but said it could prove the plane was over Syria for the duration of its flight, Interfax news agency reported.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan was briefed by the head of the military, while Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu ordered consultations with NATO, the United Nations and related countries, their respective offices said.

This should be interesting to watch...

Any guesses on a Russian response, if any?

If the Russians are saying "apparently coming under fire from the ground", it seems that their short-term reaction is to play down any grounds of indignation against Turkey.
I suggest they are not currently looking for a fight with Turkey, and would regard a quarrel as an undesirable complication.

Turkey stated it was brought down by 2 F-16's (Turkey) and not ground fire. Lavrov is suppose to visit Turkey Wednesday to try and smooth things over however I think that was before this incident.

Its possible Russia is trying to downplay the incident to prevent any escalations. However if the su-24 was in syrian airspace and it can be proven as russia claims then russia holds the cards. If thats the case why would russia downplay it?

Exactly. So the fact that the Russians suggested "ground fire" implies that they are not in a hurry to ramp up the shooting-down as an issue. They were willing to blame their enemies on the ground instead of Turkey.

P.S. It's interesting that the news of this shooting-down comes from Turkey rather then Russia.
Instead of Russia making the claim and Turkey denying it.
It looks as though the Turks are the ones who are looking for a fight (and the Russians trying to avoid it, as a distraction).
Quite possibly the Russians don't feel militarily prepared for World War3 at this stage.

Thats the other issue. Turkey has complained to Russia about them attacking turkmen forces and villages. A group Turkey protects. Blaming ground fire still results in Turkey being involved.

You may be right... I think we are seeing an incident that Russia never thought would occur and I think it might have caught them off balance.

eta - which is why i think russia may be in the wrong by them downplaying it. Turkey is not looking for a fight, they are protecting their borders. One could argue russia is looking for one by ignoring turkeys warning over airspace violations.

Yes, it does come down to who exactly is right about the location of the aircraft at the time.
