For those that follow Turkish Foreign Policy you really must be in awe in their steadfast ability to pretend to be friends with everyone while straight-faced betraying all but their own interest.

And no, NATO will not be dragged into defending Turkey over a blatantly aggressive act. Article #5 is not unconditional.

It is not hypocritical,

It is, in my opinion. Because has Erdogan said: A short-term boarder violation can never be a pretext for an attack.

Turkey did not attack, it defended.

Defended from what in 17(?) seconds?
Don't forget: A short-term boarder violation can never be a pretext for an attack.

It was absolutely necessary because Putin repects nothing but strength.

Of course this is only your subjective opinion and not a fact.

Looks like we all thought Turks would back down. Instead they increase air patrol(link to Turkish news provided here), send their whole second army to the border. This can become bad.

The Turkish military has sent 20 more tanks to an armored brigade it has stationed at Turkey's western border with Syria, Turkey's Anadolu agency reported on Wednesday.
"Accompanied by police and gendarmes, 20 tanks were sent by rail from Turkey's western provinces by railway to Gaziantep in the south of the country, and then redirected to the Syrian border," a military source told the agency.

Source

Not too sure about this source, but further echoes that the tensions are rising on the Turkish border.

In lay terms can we expect to see turkey more interested in threatening or even fighting Russia, instead of fighting ISIS? Could it be?

I think Russia will continue its bombing near the border and then another skirmish will happen between Turkish forces and Russian forces.

After which Russia will tell Turkey to pull back from the border or be nuked.

Thats when Turkey will pull back forces and the Russians will bomb the militants at the border into the stone age, or Turkey will give Russia the finger and continue fighting.

You dont need to be a genius to figure out what happens in the second scenario.. . . . . .

This war will only escalate pointing to a no fly zone near Turkey and enforced by NATO.
It will continue to escalate further as allied forces attempt to topple the government of Syria.
The question is will Russia fight NATO?
Do they dare to look at thier greatest fear head on?
I think this war may chage the world as we know it, and before things get any better we are going to watch in horror as things get much worse, not just in the middle east but for the entire earth.

What we need is for governments to stop these wars and give peace a chance. I urge everyone to contemplate an end to this bloody conflict and bring order to the earth through peace. It will only happen if we make it happen, and war will escalate only if we allow it to. Its or duty as human beings to bring about peace for the sake of our future generations not to mention the current one.

How silly the future generations will think we were if they survive a world war, perhaps they will seek to be everything we arent. Maybe we can do the same without petty wars and materialism. . . . . . .

Its time we gave peace a chance, and its time to start grassroots movements with the goal of world peace that wont stop working towards it until its achieved!

With so much military gear in a tiny area, before that can happen, there is more chance of a shell/rocket hitting an unintented target, like a spark in gunpowder.

No, Erdogan is simply following through. The implication is that Russia will invade Turkey in retaliation. It won't happen, but Erdogan has to make it look clear he is prepared and won't back down. He and Putin are like two bull elephants at the moment.

All this reminds me of the early days of Ukraine-Russia war. I was in Ukraine back then and broke the news here on ATS. I still have those twitter people as followers and now they are all talking about this. Lol, our lives nowadays....

Yesterday when I heard the news for the first time, even without "knowing the details" I said: What? Turkey shot down A Russian airplane!? Are this guys for real!? This is crazy.

Yes, the simple fact a country shots down an airplane from a nuclear weapon capable country, is, by itself, a crazy act (unless there is other reason we do not know yet)! Specialy when it's not aimed to threat your security.

So I really expect and hope that nothing more serious comes out of this. The most important is to help and focus in ending this ISIS "thing", instead of escalating tensions between countries. Also the other military powers inlvolved in this, should efectively engage on ending ISIS instead of Assad. But yet, all they want is Assad. Terrible mistake I believe.

I am somewhat impressed in Turkey's ability to keep it's different stories straight. They have their hand out to Europe and the EU while actively repudiating everything that EU stands for. But if the EU is dumb enough to fork over billions, then Turkey will happily take it and ignore any agreement.

The same goes for their NATO agreement and commitment.

To put it mildly, Turkey is not helping but their National Ego refuses to accept that they are a NATO member of convenience and not a major partner or decision maker.

For those of you that think Turkey is trying to provoke a direct conflict with Russia, relax. They will back down the instant a single cross-hair is set upon them. They have only ever been a Pawn on NATO's Chessboard in their long history in the region.
