Syrians Detained in Honduras Paid $10,000 Each in Quest for Asylum

In response to this ATS thread, Honduras Stops 5 Syrians With Fake Passports Headed To The US, I'd like to provide an update to try and quell the fear mongering.

The young men detained in Honduras have told human rights activists their final destination was next-door Guatemala, because their Turkish people smuggler who guided them through the unfamiliar continent told them they had jobs and a house waiting for them there.

However, relatives of one of the men, Laurans Samaan, said the 19-year-old was trying to reach his brother in the United States and find work. Samaan, they said, is a Syrian Christian from a village near the city of Homs, one of the hardest hit in the war. Two more of the men have Christian names.

So far appear to have no known connection to terrorism and were seeking jobs in nearby Guatemala, and one wished to reunite with his brother in the U.S.

The five were part of a wider group of seven Syrian nationals who acquired forged passports in Brazil (The passports had been doctored to replace the photographs with those of the Syrians) and then went by land to Argentina on their way north, a U.S. government source familiar with the case said. The source also said there was no evidence to suggest the men were militants.

Here we were supposed to be afraid because these men were from Syria and clearly on their way to the US because terrorist. Turns out, of course, it's not the case. Just more refugees fleeing the war torn destabilized Syria looking for a safer future. The real kicker here is they were Christians... ouch to all the conservative blogs portraying them as Muslim terrorists. Looks like these men were only trying to start over by reuniting with family and looking for work. WORK? They actually wanna work and not be a drain on society?

But, I of course, expect many to say these men are lying because terrorist.

Sorry, but 5 Christian Syrian refugees do NOT negate terrorist threats on home soil.

And there you are. Are you saying they're a threat or just saying there's always a danger of terrorists in general?

It couldnt be a change of rhetoric because Syrians with terrorist ties is very unpleasant in political terms, now could it? Naw , got to believe what they tell us....

You're right. Because 5 guys who turned out to be Christian were not terrorists we should forget all about it and assume there are no more terrorists in the world, and anyone coming with a fake passport must be friendly.

Refusing to accept refugees on the basis that a couple of them might maybe be radical Muslim terrorists is a rather unfortunate position to take.

Gaining entry to a country like the US as a refugee is actually a very tedious and complicated process. In Australia, refugees coming by boat are often intercepted and the refugees placed in detention centres for up to several years. It is definitely not the easiest way to enter the country.

Terrorists would have a much easier time entering the US or wherever on a tourist visa. If you're ostensibly a tourist, you'll be subjected to significantly less of a background check than a potential refugee. In my country, most refugees actually do arrive as tourists, and then seek asylum once they're already in the country.

Those of us lucky enough to live in the west aren't exposed to having their homes bombed, their families murdered, their lives reduced to rubble, so for some it can be difficult to truly comprehend why these people are leaving their home countries. They don't want to have to leave, but if they don't, there's a very good chance that they and all their loved ones will suffer and die. The Islamic State doesn't want people leaving their caliphate, so when people in western countries start protesting the arrival of refugees, it's playing right into their hands. They want a war, and they're doing all they can to get it.
