I am beginning to develop an extreme dislike for Martian rocks.

I don't like how they trick some people.

Sorry, are you giving an opinion or fact? Unless you were at that location on Mars when the picture was taken, I would have to go with the former.

Fact...rocks on Mars cast shadows that some mistake for a floating rock.

Opinion...I think you see what you want and don't like to hear the truth.

So then were you there when the pic was taken?

Did you see this rock float in the air?

How can you say that what you see is a floating rock, because someone on Google + says so?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Isn't the shadow in the wrong place in relation to the sunlight? Shadow is directly under...

First assumption is tumbling rock, that's all.

Focusing on a dot never helps.

You never heard of anti-gravity?

So it only effects this one rock?

How does that work?

Why would you think a rock would be floating?

I think it is some kind of sentry/security device.

Ok, if you think it is a rock, why is there a shadow underneath it?

What is the "rock" attached to if you don't think whatever it is (not a rock IMHO) is not floating? There seems to be a drop-off along the ridge behind it.

Seriously, show me on THIS picture.

I don't care about other pictures where rocks are clearly attached to other rock formations and have nothing to do with this picture.

I have had a good look and think about these images often cited as floating but I 100% see these objects as actually sticking out of the ground or out of a rock and facing the camera that is capturing the image and not actually floating, they could be just little bumps or humps and the different colours and shades also confuse the matter...but really they just rocks that look out of place
Gutted really as I wanted them to be floating rocks!

Sure, but what you and I want them to be has no bearing on what they actually are, and if this thing is floating, as actually looks to be the case and I'm not sure why people would doubt their own eyes and rely on some stranger to tell them what they are seeing; it is probably not just a rock but some kind of automated device.

I mean, how far advanced would this thing be from the drones we have? Not that much.......

I have looked at quite a few of these objects myself and scrutinised them myself and all of them give the illusion that they are floating but after adjusting my eyes to the illusion I see them all the same, no stranger told me anything other than that they were floating, I got excited at the idea hence my scrutiny

Your image is no different to what I have seen before, so I won't change my opinion because you have a good imagination

I did say I'm 100% sure that these aren't floating...my honest opinion and it will not be swayed by some stranger unless he shows me a floating object then my opinion will change

You should read this before every post.

Here's a closeup of the same area taken from another angle 1 second later. The first panel is how it originally looks, the second is with an auto-level filter, the third is with a blurred filter added. You can see it's a rock and the "floating" shadow is a shadow cast from a smaller rock below it.

You've been around long enough to have heard of pareidolia...

I reckon it's a floating sentry rock there to monitor all the other (non-floating) rocks in case of an organised mass disturbance such as a landslide or other mass flow. It just has to be!

SO this thread isn't about a floating object that is a rock and has a shadow, as that is all Mars has...rocks, rocks, and dust?

Why would you think anything is floating in the first place?

It looks like some kind of security bot, maybe keeping an eye on the Martian rove

No offense but I think I'll wait til Corey tells us what it is in an 'update'.

That right there is the Great Martian Hover-Rock....known affectionately among the locals as "Bob".

Yep.

Welcome to Mars, watch out for Bob.
He has a temper we hear tell.
Especially after a few beers.

Don't Drink and Hover.

Peace.

Why do you have to make it so complicated? Haven't you ever heard of Occam's razor?

It is exactly what it looks like, some kind of floating/hovering drone with a shadow underneath it.

No need to contort and convolute the truth.
