The Well

Every morning she carries the bucket from the well to her home. It is the first thing she does every day. Bring the liquid of life to her family so their thirst can be quenched. The well is deep, it is ancient and has never run dry. Many, many people before her have used the well, have taken what they needed to quench their thirst. Some have taken more then they needed, some have taken not enough. She never takes too little or too much. Always just enough to satisfy her family for the day. She knows that others may need to drink from the well, and so she doesn't want to be selfish and take more then she needs.

It is a small task, anyone could do it really. Anyone could take a bucket and make the trek to the well. The road is not too hard nor is the bucket too heavy, yet most do not wish to make the journey. Most are happy letting her do the task. Often she wonders why they do not wish to visit the well. But as she looks around and sees, she realizes they do not care to make the journey because they are too busy doing other things. They do not realize how important it is to drink from the well each day. They do not understand that it is the giver of life. Do not know that without the daily sustenance it gives, they would no longer exist.

So she journeys every morning to the well. To bring back what each and every one of the others need to survive. And she does this unselfishly, because that is her way. And each time she visits the well and dips her bucket into it, she says thank you and drops a flower petal onto its surface. Because she knows that whenever you take from the well, you must also give to it, so it never runs empty.

And as she does this, she wonders how many others visit the well. For she never sees anyone else there. How many others carry the bucket and make the journey each day. And she also wonders what, if anything, they give back to the well. How do they say thank you and what do they offer to keep it full? For each time she visits the well, she never sees more than her own flower petals floating upon its surface....
