Hatred And Bigotry Run Amok On Facebook

Conservatives and religious extremists are displaying mind-numbing hatred and bigotry on social media in response to the Paris tragedy last week.

Why do scared ignorant people always react before using critical thought process. Why does fear always bring out the stupid.

Also what is bombing going to do, except make more extremists? I mean you cannot kill an ideal so how exactly is killing innocents with the bad guys gonna resolve anything?

Made an edit..it is not just conservatives, my other liberal friends support not allowing refugees in due to fear and ignorance.

If you expect ANYTHING good, well mannered, productive, insightful, intelligent, meaningful, sincere, honest, real, precise, human...to come from FACEBOOK...from ANYONE...with ANY belief...you've already lost.

Facebook is FAIL. It is literally human FAILURE on display, with photos, and 'streaming'..

Radical Muslims commit acts of terror.

People get angry and lash out.

Cause and effect. Human nature. Simple really.

What the smart ones among us will do is channel the anger and grief into something positive.

Like, getting everyone to agree on an actual plan in Syria and Iraq to defeat ISIS. And a plan to distinguish radical Islamists within our countries so we can deal with them before they attack.

Maybe they don't want refugees to come in due to rational fear and educated opinions about Islamic culture. Which is the opposite of baseless fear and ignorance.

What is bombing going to do? If that's a serious question, here's a serious answer. Bombs could wipe everyone out in the region. That would be a solution of sorts, right? Maybe not a solution you like, but a solution nonetheless.

Those sound exactly like the words of terrorists. Kill as many as possible to eliminate a threat.

Funny how all those anti Muslims threads..etc...sound an awful lot like what radicals preach.

Probably because a lot of them are financing their trip by selling off their homes and leaving their wives and children alone in the dust to fend for themselves.

Compassion is a great thing in small doses but too much of it can be fatal.

Just ask Grizzly man. He refused to use bear mace over his guilty conscience.

Spoiler Alert: The bears ate him.

........ and his girlfriend.

Kill the bears!

Seriously? You're comparing people to bears?
You tried that with snakes in the other thread, that didn't work out so good, did it? So you switched to bears?

I'm really not to surprise to see so much ignorance, bigotry, racism and Islamophobia on my Facebook feed:

Trump's probably not hurting himself too much with his negativity toward Muslims either- only 49% of Republicans think the religion of Islam should even be legal in the United States with 30% saying it shouldn't be and 21% not sure. Among Trump voters there is almost even division with 38% thinking Islam should be allowed and 36% that it should not.

publicpolicypolling.com

I've just decided to unfriend those who are allowing fear to run their lives. I remember post-9/11 how we all got duped into hating Islam so much we went to war in Iraq.

I'm not going to let anyone use fear on me to justify more killing.

Besides, ISIS is more of a threat to other Muslims than to anyone else. 70% of all the mass shootings have been white males here in America, I'd be more worried about that guy at work that never talks than the Muslim guy.

Gosh. That's sort of harsh, don't you think?

The racism driven reaction to this awful event speaks for where humanity currently sits as a whole. We need to progress as rational human beings the way we're progressing in technology. People are trying to create a divide and they don't see the damage it is causing. This is exactly what the terrorists hoped for, and I can't believe it's working. I'm appalled by the things I have been reading in the past couple days. It reminds me of something Lil B said in Age of Information--we're going to be living on the moon, but there's still going to be racists. I hope we learn to live together as one so we can get out of these dark times. It cannot continue like this for much longer if we still want to live on this planet/at all

Not really. Most of those aren't offline, real-world associations. I also went through a while back and "unliked" everything I had "liked" (movies, music, books, ect). Its amazing how much "cleaner" Facebook is. Quite a few less "suggested" things, ads for products and whatnot. I've paired down Facebook to just a place to chat with friends I know personally and family members.

Most people have so many 'friends' (I think Facebook has really diluted the term friend btw) that me unfriending them won't even be noticed.

The thing is, people that post ignorant memes and things in that vein don't want to discuss -- they want to argue, their minds are made up and no amount of reason or logic will do anything.

I think the Internet has lost its collective mind. I was listening to an audiobook yesterday which was talking about the brains wiring and that we are far more likely as humans to hunt out bad news and further bad news to strengthen those connections. So I guess I'm not surprised by the reactions. It's no different than the popular doom porn threads on ATS, which seem to stimulate the memberships brain and create a demand for more fear.

There are ways we can decrease fear, but people are generally not interested as it doesn't provide the stimulation. I feel quite lucky sometimes that having come face to face with my own mortality on numerous times, I don't actually fear much these days. I certainly don't worry about things that I can't control any, ore. That is a waste of precious time and a useless process. I don't even know why people fear terrorism, I assume they don't fear getting in their cars each day.

You think that does not describe a fair percentage, if not a majority, of OPs on ATS?

The real question is why does anyone use Facebook or care what people say on it in the first place. I am perfectly content to let the world of social media go on without me or my input. At least ATS and our forums here have intelligent, thoughtful people on it to share ideas and discussion with...Facebook is the Wal-mart of the internet.

Normal id agree.

But I have seen freinds who are i thought pretty mild display some troubleling ideas.

I would not be surprised if more people died by heart attacks related to hearing a noise or seeing someone pull a phone out of their pocket each year than actual terrorist attacks

I think the difference is on Facebook you (generally) have created a little hug-box of like minded people around you. On ATS, when you post something -- you're going to get an avalanche of opinions that you may not have even dreamed existed.

Uniformed people I've had on my Facebook rarely get called out for posting memes with entirely false quotes. Here on ATS, not only will your meme be called out, but the actual speaker for the quote will be tracked down by 5 individuals within half an hour.

If there's one thing ATS does well -- it shows people a much larger world-view, compared to the narrow window of Facebook. Facebook tends to tailor itself to suit your likes/dislikes and builds itself around you. ATS, on the other hand, doesn't do that.

Maybe. But in an awful lot of cases it seems you can only lead a horse so far.

But, never having been exposed to the facebook, I'll grant that things could be worse than ATS.
