I have posted this info on a few threads, but thought I should just make a dedicated one.

Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc
Log in to Steam and click on Library.
Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
Insert the first disc into your computer.
Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
Press Windows Key + R to open Run
In the Run window type:

"C: Program FilesSteamSteam.exe" -install E:

Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
Replace C: Program FilesSteam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

It's a shame that's all discs are used for in gaming now; the installs. Most games I play on PC don't even need the disc to be in to play, once installed.

To be honest it's not so much the running off the disc I miss; it's more the fun of collecting a huge games library. Personally I think downloads will eventually wipe out physical copies altogether, and then that will be impossible. Still, times change.

I'll be honest once the game boxes started to get small that was my first realization the good days are on the way out.

I loved collecting those giant PC game boxes

I think because it's tangible, it has much more value. You can really admire your collection. Whereas with downloads it's just a long, long, tedious list.

I prefer physical copies of games. They (used to) come with the full game, so I don't have to download anything except patches.

With PC games i've purchased that require Steam i've installed them from the disc by putting the disc in first signing in when asked inputting the registration key and i've found it will install from the disc if you do it that way instead of being signed into Steam then putting the disc in.
