Un-freaking-believable!
Using Free Speech to condemn Free Speech which is being used to celebrate Free Speech!
You can't make this stuff up.

So a student organization's campus display, celebrating the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, while extolling the importance of Free Speech, the condemnation of censorship, segregation and political correctness, is protested by students as "offensive and an example of privilege"...and reported to the university 'bias Hotline' as a "bias incident"...in an coordinated effort to shut it down.

IMO...This is hypocrisy, irony, stupidity, insanity (take your pick) on parade.
I remember hearing that in Nazi Germany, it was university students who first started the book burnings. Now, I believe it could be true.

Are our universities now becoming the new hotbeds of censorship, intolerance, predjudice and fascism?
Is the new definition of 'social justice' really just plain old-fashioned censorship and intolerance?

It's getting ugly out there folks...and I think it will be getting even uglier; hopefully not 'Nazi-Germany' ugly, but our universities are now turning on themselves in the most insane ways.

A large mock-up of the Berlin Wall meant to remind students at the University of Michigan of the importance free speech was instead roundly criticized by many students, with some even declaring that the display constituted a “bias incident.”

The mock-up was erected Monday, on the 26th anniversary of the real wall’s demise, in the center of campus. It included spray painted graffiti comments representing censorship, including “report me,” “safe spaces,” and “trigger warning.” At one point demonstrators even mimed the historic moment during which East Germans took mallets and hammers and tore down the wall.

The display’s objective was to both commentate the historic event as well as link USSR-era repression of ideas and speech with modern politically correct speech and thought police movements on campus, organizers told The College Fix.

Yet many students declared the fake Berlin Wall offensive and an example of privilege – and at least one student told organizers – Young Americans for Freedom – that the display should be reported as a “bias incident.”

Another student even pulled out his phone and reportedly called administrators to lodge an official bias complaint.

The public university administers a “bias incident” reporting system, which includes a phone number “hotline” and an online form, with which students may report things on campus that upset them.

“If you witness or experience conduct that discriminates, stereotypes, excludes, harasses or harms anyone in our community based on their identity (such as race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age or religion) please report it to the university,” the website reads.

One student told the Michigan Daily that the Berlin Wall display “ignores all the progress we’ve made on promoting political correctness, and social justice across the university. It just puts it on some wall for some people who are privileged to take turns beating at. It’s unbelievable. This is a bias incident, and it needs to stop.”

Other students told the Daily they did not understand the link between Soviet-style repression and campus speech codes, and felt the event went overboard.

Members of Young Americans for Freedom faced other criticism as well. On the Facebook page for the event, it was called “an embarrassment to the University of Michigan and to our student body.”

And while passing out free constitutions as part of the demonstration, YAF members were told by a female student passing by: “You are the type of guys who will rape your wives.” She flipped them off with her middle finger as she strode away.

Chairman of YAF’s University of Michigan chapter, Grant Strobl, said the reaction to the display is unfortunate.

“After being told that we should die, that we are rapists, that we are idiots, and were stereotyped based upon ethnicity, I have realized that the people who criticize efforts to fight for free speech and against political correctness are hypocrites,” he stated on the New Guard Blog.

yep, sounds about right for these days, huh!!
when I read George Orwells book in 1970, I knew it would happen. Did anyone notice the difference in character of the subsequent generations......general lack og logic as if something is lying to them.......
The generations have it tougher in the way of future outlook for sure.....and that's my ministry.....youth outreach....

Can anyone explain this to me? Clearly I got left out of this bubble. This is truly boggling my mind.

First let me say that I hate talking about my age. However I am a millennial and my kids are also millennials. So, if I can't understand this I feel it has to be some massive attempt to make any change whether it be for the better or worse.

This is the agenda now. People are offended by free speech.

We have some animals that should be more equal than others as evidenced by the Orwellian college campus situation.

I'm not into doomporn, but I have to think this is going to cause backlash on a large scale soon.

Can we get some pics of the alleged "protest" against this display? My niece attends school there and saw nothing worth reporting. The display itself was barely worth mentioning.

According to the organization itself (Young Americans for Freedom), the protesters (what few there may have been ) were "communist protesters" - again, it seems it was no more than one or two "protesters" expressing their own pro-communist views over their anti-communist slogans used on their display.

"World Freedom Day building and tearing down of a mock Berlin Wall, fortunate enough to receive the attention from a few communist protesters

Source: their website

Personally this just like a lot of hullabaloo over nothing. Some students with way too much time on their hands making some type of display then rushing to social media because they got exactly what they craved, some sort of negative comments from other students.

*yawn*

Let me guess ... this group would not be able to have their own safe place to be safe from offensive speech?

My husband said that he couldn't believe that this:

One student told the Michigan Daily that the Berlin Wall display “ignores all the progress we’ve made on promoting political correctness, and social justice across the university. It just puts it on some wall for some people who are privileged to take turns beating at. It’s unbelievable. This is a bias incident, and it needs to stop.”

Was serious and not some joke. It's like it's straight out of the Onion.

And I know they truly believe that squashing free speech is freedom, and that's so Orwellian it's not even funny anymore.

All I can say is if I were a college student I'd steer clear of the kids talking about "safe spaces" AND kids in a group with a name like Young Americans for Freedom.

In both cases, regressive extremist pupae.

I guess this to be expected in an " edge of the epoch "....or edge of time deally. Did you guys know it's about to change back to how it's supposed to be....good thing.....in your lifetime We'll see the return of the man from Galilee, to explain, He's the right arm of God......you know ....like in Hebrew, the name of God means " see the hand, see the nail. Colleges were the one place where I trusted that nothing would be ever banned.

Now they are the first place where things are being banned.

Individuality?
Free expression?

Sure. If you get permission first.

Our son is only four years old.... so I will be watching how the world of academia evolves over the next 14 years.

That being said.... and what I would really like to know is....

I wish there was a way to get a break-down of who the alleged protesters are by major.
(I say "alleged protesters" because I'm not even sure if many of them know what they are protesting exactly).

I could be wrong, but I suspect the vast majority, if not the totality of the protesters are NOT majoring in subjects such as physics and engineering.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion....as long as someone doesn't consider it a 'bias incident'.
This group was passing out offensive literature in the the form of copies of the U.S. constitution as part of their display, so it's only natural they should be considered muckrakers and trouble-makers.

So life got in the way. Put my kids first had to leave school. But and this really is a big but.

I was on PACDEI at the school I attended. As a non traditional student it was considered an importent perspective. So let me share how what I read from the links above are even more confusing.

PACDEI devides into smaller committees and gets out there and speaks to the student body to find about issues that were previously not known.

In order to have equity and inclusion you must first discover the areas where these are lacking. Therefore requiring staff to take equity and inclusion classes only make send if the staff is the area it's lacking.

I'm disturbed that this school has bowed to pressure and seems will to keep bowing to pressure. IF THE STUDENTS DON'T UNDETSTAND FREEDOM OF SPEECH THAT'S THE ISSUE!! The resolution needs to be a mandatory constitution seminar.

I typed this when it happened but I'm going to type it again last year I checked this book out at the library.
www.amazon.com...#-Taboo-Protecting-Amendment-Liberties/dp/1572487119

It was right before the forth of July so when my son asked to read it I let him. He was told at school, by his teacher that children don't have first amendment rights. I really don't understand what is going on. I really can't comprehend how this crybullyimh has come to be the norm.

And where are these teens h.s. history teachers screaming in the news that they knew these children were taught better?!

What does this have to do with the Berlin Wall? How are those things censorship? If some one is harassing you and you want them to stop that is not censorship.
Love the attacks on higher education coming from the same people screaming about facism. Because we all know facism lives educated people right?

Say hello to the college campus contrarian hipster, these are students with no real purpose in life other than going to college because they're supposed to, living on their parents dime, who seek out philosophies to revile their staid humdrum upbringing, some become communists, some become satanists, some become militant feminists, and some become arch-conservative or arch-liberal, why? Because they crave the attention their adopted-philosophies provoke. College campuses are full of these pretentious twits spending mommy and daddie's money while hanging out in the coffee shops and local college bars. Why, some even take a class or two, nothing before 2PM mind you as they spend their nights playing Fallout 4 or waxing poetic on the virtues of whatever adopted mindset they've embraced. The militant feminist will hold meetings on how they are offended by everything men do, the communists hold meetings on their oppression under capitalism, the satanists hold meetings on how evil god really is, the LGBT club meets to promote their views, and yes, there are plenty of conservative groups promoting their views and how everyone else is ruining the world, welcome to every freshman's favorite course, Circlejerk 101.

Normally this stuff thankfully remains confined to the petri dish that is the college campus, but sadly this particular piece of twaddle has escaped into the conservative blogosphere where working men and women who have an actual life are supposed to sit up and be outraged. Spare yourself and leave this drivel where it belongs, in the pages of the local campus student-published newspapers, alongside the suicide-girl poems and missives by the contrarian hipsters pining how everything has become so offensive since entering college. This is crafted faux-rage at its finest.

I think people confuse what gov censorship really is.... people saying you shouldn't say something is not them silencing you or infringing your first. The first protects you from the state, it doesn't mean you can aay what ever you want with no consequence.

For a brief moment, I actually pondered that question until reality slapped me in the face and reminded me that although it is the college professors that we hear about most, by the time young people reach college they have already been indoctrinated/brainwashed... BY their high school teachers. Not 100%. Not at every single school but essentially across the board at public schools.

Just an anecdote... When my younger sister was in (I believe) 10th grade I went to my parents house for dinner one night. I had asked her about school and I was shocked when she told me what her Social Studies assignment was. Explain why the George W. Bush presidency is a failure. Not.... do you think GWB's presidency was a failure? There was literally NO ROOM for critical thinking.
(I think W sucked, by the way, but that is not the point).

It is in the public high schools and public elementary schools where these insane seeds are planted. Not keeping score in soccer games to spare people's feelings and all that.
