Ideally they should be bombproof to go out on the road. My friends horse died after someone appeared on the road in front of them dragging a large branch. In a situation like that the horse may actually think it's about to be beaten with half a tree. The horse threw her off, bolted, came to a fork, headed towards one direction, saw a lorry, changed direction, and ran straight into a stone wall.

It's the unusual things that scare them. When the hunt meet a group of horse drawn travellers it isn't the travellers horses that start freaking and climbing through the hedges.

I don't know how I couldn't have seen this before. I've just realized it's the masks that caused the extra skittishness.

Really hard to train skittish out of horses. You're right about protests, horses expect people to be reasonably behaved. Protests are about demonstration of dissent, civil disobedience makes no sense to them at all. Get it, horse sense?
