Do we want our world to end?

Browsing internet I stumbled into this article:

When two or more people have similar false beliefs about another person, it's possible this could influence the person's behavior. Researchers Stephanie Madon, Max Guyll, Richard Spoth, and Jennifer Willard, all at Iowa State University, examined this phenomenon to see how much influence those collective beliefs have in determining a positive or negative reality.

This might sound pretty far fetched to many of you, but the story made me think again about question which is popping in my head quite often recently: Is it possible that we, humans can create our destruction because we believe in it ?
We live in troubled times, that is for sure. Many say that WW III already started, or is about to happen. Our climate is changing no doubt about that either. We are facing major changes. Hundreds of people are preaching that the end is near.
How many people all over the world wish that everything should end because their religion beliefs include armageddon?
Is it possible that our common unconscious is leading us towards destruction?

There is this old expression: "be careful what you wish for, because it might happen"

Yes, I think it's true.
The collective beliefs of the majority can create and affect

I agree 100%, many people think, and want the world to end soon. This in itself could manifest the end of the world AS WE KNOW IT... but leading up to the year 1000 most christians believed the world would end (for those who may not be aware, the world is still here 1005 years on)...

The difference is nowadays, there are alot of christian fundamentalists in high position (cough Bush cough, not just him but others in the background who pull the strings)... Now the crazy fundies want the world to end, but they think the Jews need to be in their homeland for this to truly happen, which is why (i'm sure there are other reasons, but this i'm sure is one is up there) the US supports Israel so much. And now we have the power to end the world ourselves instead of waiting for external forces...

If someone believes strongly enough the world must end in the next decade, and has command over nukes it is quite dangerous. When they see the world not ending, they will do it themselves (and likely see themselves as sent from god to do his will)

Possibility that we, humans can affect our future just by thinking about it is pretty scary...
Imagine ; majority of earth population want our world to end...
But from other (my hopeless side) - what could happen if we all started to believe in better future???

So, why not the end of the world?

Hopefully, we will continue to have more people believing that the world won't end than believe it will ---- just in case this really works.

It�s interesting but I just don�t buy it. I mean, considering the entire timeline of human history, we are living in some pretty pacifist times.

Remember that whole Black Plaque thing? How millions across Europe died because of their lack of sanitation? People wish and hoped for the world to end. And it didn�t.

What about the crusades? Christians parading around the globe trying to rid the world of Allah. People absolutely knew the world was going to come to an end, but what happened? Nothing.

The reason why people wish for the apocalypse is to come is to have salvation. Salvation may come in the form of being scooped up from the sky by God. Or maybe loading a truck full of supplies and living out in the wilderness.

I'm sure you remember the y2k hype. I went to Albertsons on the 31st to cash in my small check and people were running around the store trying to purchase all the water and can foods possible. Here everyone is scrambling around like fools while I�m just trying to cash in my check use my fake ID to buy some beers.

Anyway, my point is whenever apocalyptic talk arises; there is a collective effervescence around the world. People desire the world to end so that they can start a new.

Does anyone remember middle of last year stories were going around Internet that Bush & Co. were seeking Remote viewers and psychics and prophets?

hmmmmm.......Makes you wonder, doesnt it?

I have long been a scholar of the Bible, and have always thought that God gives us a guideline within it to prevent our own demise as a race. If we, individually and collectively, would truly study and practice our religious beliefs, I do think we could evolve indefinitely. Unfortunately, not enough people will realize this and turn it into reality. 'Human nature' is just too strong in some of us. Others do not realize the need to rise above it. Either way, we're probably screwed.

Simulacra (great to see you well again BTW )
You talk about Europe -i f you look at the global map you will see how small continent Europe is - in times of Plaque there was not much knowledge about the rest of the world - (from European point of view of course). So can we assume that the rest of the world was not hoping for the end?
It applies to crusade time as well...

And about Y2K times -I think around this time people started thinking about the end -now it is 2005 and you can see what is happening...

For some people I think it goes beyond a simple religious belief or fear. Some people honestly want for the end of the world as an end to hunger, pain, suffering, and all the bad things that plague us. Others want it over with because they think we don't deserve the gifts and life we have now and dont apprecaite it. Its not hard to imagine things from that point of view either; just turn on the tv and listen for about an hour to the evening news. With the level of atrocities going on, the disasters striking left and right its not suprising people would want to wipe it all away.

I don't know if any of you are Tool fans, but this discussion reminds me very much of their song 'aenima'.

The ones of us who believe our salvation is possible are so few.

When humans come to believe in divine and ancient writings to be the model they follow as to be the way in wish certain events should occurs, it comes to the point that after seen this events not coming to completion, humans will find a way to make it happened and they will even make or fabricate this events.

Its not that people wants to see the end of the world but is just that peoples believes makes them look for it.

You know, some times I think(yea surprising isnt it)...What if this whole apocalypse nonsense was just some big scam to sell...I don�t know, bottled water. Or storm sheds. I mean think about it. The apocalypse has become so commercial. Its just so...2000ish.

Guaranteed if the world was to end a week from today, huge corporations would be scrambling to create Apocalypse commemorative plates. McDonalds would create the 'Armageddon Burger'. And don�t forget, bottled water sales would sky rocket. Have to be hydrated for when the end of the world comes!

This is called the Pygmalion Effect. And it is used constantly by Hollywood to batten down the realization that our civilization is fragmenting.

Fragmenting? Sure. Porn. Violence. Civil unrest that has nowhere to go.

We do not get the truth about the problems we need so to solve; so no problem gets solved because we do not expect to be able to solve it.

We do not expect to be able to stop the lying and deceit coming from the political process, and so the political process continues to operate by lies and deceit with impunity.

We do not expect to be able to stop the progression of drugs and psych ops into our culture; and so we in fact are powerless to stop the progression of drugs and psychops into our culture.

And so forth.

Yes, the Pygmalion Effect MERELY mirrors the fact that Thoughts are GENERATIVE, creative and powerful.

So long as people violate the "GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT" Rule, we are impotent, ignorant and powerless.

I think many of us actually want to see the end of the world, because it's so exciting and something we only see in movies. Unfortunately, when it begins for us, we won't want it anymore. The human is an enigma.
