Mugabe wins China's alternative to Nobel Prize.

BEIJING (AP) — Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has been awarded China's alternative to the Nobel Peace Prize for what the prize committee called his inspired national leadership and service to pan-Africanism.

The 91-year-old Mugabe is the latest in a series of critics of the West who have received the Confucius Peace Prize, first awarded in 2010 amid Beijing's anger and resentment over the granting of the Nobel Peace Prize to imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

Mugabe has "overcome difficulties of all kinds and has strongly committed himself to constructing his nation's political and economic order, while strongly supporting pan-Africanism and African independence," the committee said in announcing the award.

Oh, it is to laugh.

The government of President Robert Mugabe continues to violate human rights without regard to protections in the country’s new constitution. An expected legislative framework and new or amended laws to improve human rights in line with the constitution has yet to materialize. Police violate basic rights, such as freedom of expression and assembly, using old laws that are inconsistent with the new constitution. Activists and human rights defenders, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, face police harassment. There has been no progress toward securing justice for human rights abuses and past political violence, including violence after the 2008 election.

Human rights watch.

To say China is on the wrong side of history would be to understate the case...

This, and other awards given to outspoken critics of the West are largely in response to the Nobel Prize given to Liu Xiaobo.

Liu Xiaobo.

2015 human rights report--Zimbabwe

The government of President Robert Mugabe continued to violate human rights in 2014 without regard to protections in the country’s new constitution. An expected legislative framework and new or amended laws to improve human rights in line with the constitution never materialized.

Some 20,000 people, displaced by flooding from the Tokwe-Mukorsi dam in Masvingo province in February, were evicted and resettled with little government protection. They have not received adequate compensation, including land for resettlement, and were pressured to relocate to land with disputed titles. When displaced people protested in August, over 200 anti-riot police used excessive force and beat and arrested about 300 people; 29 were charged with public violence. At time of writing, the case was still being heard in court.

What's to say, really? An award given to someone who gave Idi Amin a run for his money is an exemplar of leadership?

I fully realize that this "award" was given to spite the Nobel Prize committee...but even the most ardent critic of the West must know just how meaningless this is...

The Cold War is back in all its glorious idiocy pretending to be real politik. Once I really hoped the Cold War was over...foolish dreams, apparently.

Obama got the REAL Nobel Peace Prize, Mugabe's actions speak volumes as to how "in your face" this "prize" was www.nytimes.com...

could it be anything other than a publicity stunt?

Oh, it's nothing but a publicity stunt.

China is browned off about Liu Xiaobo being awarded the Nobel for his work in Human Rights in China, which leave much to be desired...and this is the only way they can "punish" the west for it.

I find it somewhat disconcerting that one of the members of the committee that finally gave Mugabe the award was none other than Bill Gates.

That says nothing good about Mr. Gates. Nothing what so ever.

Of course, the Chinese have been given access to Zim's mineral wealth, and Mugabe needs to be kept happy. It has nothing to do with peace as some people think of peace.

I'm not a huge fan of Gates … to me, he seems like the other "Politicians" and representatives who pretend to care about the people/public, but in reality they all just want to keep each other in the "upper circles" and control the rest of us.

Mugabe is a hero to many in Africa .
Some people even pray to him .
He enjoys respect of many African states .

So no surprise he's getting a slap on the back .
But that's the same BS the world over ...

Mugabe is like the black hitler. Horrible filthy rich dictator. Dispossesses some white farmers lands, turning it into barren fields. Doesn't matter the masses have been fed their scape goat, as long as they dont ask real questions.
Same tactics like in SA, except more racist. Indeed China needs to give Mugabe a little treat while he sells of all his nations resources to the chinese.
