Dynamic Airways 767 catches fire in Florida

Dynamic Airways 405, a Boeing 767, suffered a major engine fire while taxiing to the runway at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport. Fifteen people were reportedly transported to local hospitals, with most injuries reported as minor. There was one significant burn injury, and two mow burn injuries reported. There were 101 passengers and crew on board the flight, which was bound for Venezuela.

The aircraft suffered major damage as a result. The pilot of another aircraft taxiing behind the Dynamic aircraft reported seeing fuel leaking from the left engine.

The aircraft was a 767-200ER, built in 1986. It was one of only seven remaining that were built in that year.

It sounds like it will turn out to be a maintenance issue if it was leaking fuel before the fire started. It could be an age related issue, but I bet it'll turn out to be someone screwed up during the last engine maintenance/change.

Some news footage so far, very heavy smoke and burning fuel on the ground, scary.

Another pilot radioed them and told them there was a lot of what appeared to be fuel leaking from the engine, and almost immediately after they reported a fire to the tower.

I always thought that jet fuel was notoriously hard to combust. It has to be vaporized before it will ignite, or am I thinking of something else?

Jet fuel will burn nicely as a liquid if the temperature is high enough. That's what the airport fire department burns for training. It won't explode unless it vaporizes.

There were 21 people injured. There were 90 passengers and 11 crew on board. The aircraft is 30 years old, with no prior accidents or incidents. It was up to date on all required checks and maintenance, and passed all required gate inspections.

The fuel line coupling worked loose and disconnected as they were taxiing, leading to the fire. The aircraft was in storage for two years prior to September, so when it was restored to flight, the coupling was probably not tightened properly and slowly worked loose.
