We each of us have exactly twenty-four hours in a day.

And how we wield that time says everything about our persona and character.

Within the world we exist in today, too many waste away their idle time at worthless pursuits. They watch television, they play games that offer scant chance of intellectual improvement, they waste time in bars destroying their livers and minds. And they subside in perpetual states of sloth rather than training themselves towards always putting forth full effort at self-improvement.

In short, they waste their lives with excessive surrender unto situations of leisure whilst doing little or nothing designed towards enhancing and evolving their essential states--hardly striving towards accomplishing anything designed towards improving themselves on physical, mental, or spiritual levels.

And whilst most pay their bills and go to work and complete all those rote and menial tasks society demands towards obtaining food and shelter and a fair standard of living, far too many accomplish that and nothing more--taking action towards accomplishing only the bare minimum requirements of life, and thus never exploiting or enjoying the full potential of this amazing opportunity towards being alive.

The problem is a lack of intrinsic motivation. It's an absence of that internal spark that fuels dedicated individuals towards aiming always towards states of perpetual and relentless self-improvement.

But although most currently suffer a lack of that internal fire compelling others towards greatness, that problem is never eternal. People can always change, people can always improve, and people can always find something that lights within them a fire of motivation that compels them towards taking positive action that leads their lives in more productive directions.

If you find yourself caught in that trap where you work all day then come home and waste away your free time sitting on a couch doing nothing but staring at the television screen or surfing aimlessly online on the computer, recognize that you've fallen into that identical snare that traps so many others. Then resolve that you'll immediately start finding ways to escape that morass of physical and mental and spiritual stagnation.

All it takes is finding something that inspires you towards action. All you lack is a goal you consider worth pursuing.

All you need is to start wielding your imagination and begin chasing your dreams.

So start wielding that computer for something more productive than searching for porn and celebrity gossip. Start using it as a mechanism by which you can find for yourself a new source of inspiration.

Open up your browser, navigate towards your favorite search engine, then start looking up information about something that always interested you but you never really studied in depth. Then, start studying it every night--learning more and more each day about something that fills you with fire and stokes the furnaces of your inner curiosity.

As kids we did this instinctively--becoming intrigued unto obsession with thing after thing, developing a catalog of knowledge about various subjects, and wielding our minds like the storehouse repositories of encyclopedic knowledge and demonstrable talents that they were meant to be.

But somewhere along the aging process, at some point along your unidirectional sojourn through the rivers of time, you lost that drive. You became content with your current body of knowledge and commenced coasting forward into the future instead of racing ahead at a breakneck pace each day excited towards discovering more things about the world in which you reside.

That cycle of apathetic indifferent and stubborn stagnation might've held you in its grips for a year or two or even a decade or more--but it's never too late to start breaking that cycle and rekindling that inner fire of intrinsic motivation. So instead of wasting another night in front of the television or surfing unproductive sites online, seriously consider taking your life in another direction and getting inspired towards learning something new and engaging in relentless quest for self-improvement.

Although I never thought of it in those express terms, that's what I've been doing nearly my entire life. I've been studying a variety of martial arts since I was young, made myself perform daily research on exercise science and kinesiology and nutrition throughout my undergrad years studying computer science in college, studied Buddhism and Taoism and meditation and Qigong extensively during my time in law school.

Then after graduating law school and passing the bar, I took that recreational pursuit of supplemental learning into new levels. Through concerted daily practice I taught myself how to write fiction and nonfiction until I got published multiple times. Through sheer guts and determination I taught myself how to race cars until I confronted the most dangerous track in the world. Through essential pride I taught myself to ski until I accomplished a run from the peak of a mountain.

I've studied chess, competed at a reasonably high level in competitive gaming, swam and played other sports throughout college, and trained myself in rock climbing. Right now I'm learning to sing because I'm bored, and I'm studying Japanese and hirigana in my spare time.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I'm always looking for ways to up my game and spend my time on earth wisely--but regardless what I attempt and no matter what I accomplish, one constant holds true: I always seek out those things that inspire me, and I strive always at achieving relentless self-improvement.

I stopped watching television years ago. I ceased visiting sites that never offer me anything of real worth.

I strive towards only doing productive things with my time and life.

And there's nothing different between us, so you can do the same.

Get inspired and improve. Start wielding your time wisely. And don't waste another moment before starting that long climb out from that morass of stagnation and rekindling the fires of motivation inside.

After all, existence is many things, but it's too short to waste without mastering this fun little game we call life.

And you'll never conquer your reality by wasting another night staring at the television.

But I'm like a wheelbarrow - I need to be pushed.

Does motivation precede action or does action precede motivation?

Still trying to figure that one out...

Maybe Newtonian Physics?
Inertia- 1. A tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged.

2. A property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force.
Newton's Third Law

Sometimes the opposite is true, we need to feel miserable to improve.
