A retired army major and a team of 100 - 150 army reservists is occupying a police station and holding police officers as hostages in what is quoted as a politically motivated move in a town in souther Peru.

Peru has declared a state of emergency in a southern Andean region where dozens of army reservists have seized a police station.

The group, led by a retired army major, is demanding the resignation of President Alejandro Toledo.

Mr Ferrero [ Prime Minister] said: "We will not allow a group of subversives to try to use violent acts to shatter Peru's democracy and its laws."

The retired army major Antauro Humala:

"[...] added that his brother, Ollanta Humala - who led a military revolt against former President Alberto Fujimori in 2000 - was on his way to join the uprising. "

So, is this an act intended to restore democracy and freedom from oppression, or is this an act of terrorism / nationalism ?

Five die in police shootout

FIVE police officers died today in a shootout with supporters of an ex-soldier who took over a police station in a southern Peru early on New Year's Day and took 10 police hostage, RPP radio reported.

The radio quoted hospital officials as saying the five police had died of gunshot wounds.

Dr Waldo Altamirano at the hospital earlier confirmed to Reuters that one police officer dispatched to the southern Andean town of Andahuaylas had arrived dead at the hospital, but the radio report could not immediately be confirmed.
