ya, it's not like they are trying to take the rights of any heterosexual couples out there who are trying to skimp and save some money and therefore taking the cheapest path to MARRIAGE they can find, or those who wish not to partake in religious ceremonies the right to marry now is it???

Again the government can not invoke any spiritual involvement into a marriage.

Commo0n law marriage without a ceremony is nothing more that a civil union

You do understand this is your own personal belief, right?

Legal Marriage is secular. That's fact. As it should be.

she is claiming that the only unions that should be labeled as marriages are those that involve a religious ceremony, therefore there are many heterosexual marriages that wouldn't be qualified as marriages either.

No it is a fact that the government has no governance over spiritualism or religious aspect of marriage.

If you do not accept that then tell me what spiritual powers the government has

Yep.

One of those who think religion owns a word.

ya know, I wish I had my head in the sand sometimes, but I sure as heck am glad I don't life in that alternate universe that you seem to think you are living in.
Marriages don't now, nor have they ever, except for that brief times that the holy roman empire thought that they could hijack marriage, required any religious ceremony!!!!

you are assuming that there has to be a spiritual aspect or religious aspect to marriage.
you are then assuming that one has to have a thrid party ordained to perform some ritual to invoke this spiritaul aspect into the marriage...
I don't believe either are true....
like I said, those slave believed in their hearts they were married, there was no ritual really, no preacher, just their friends and family gathered to watch them jump a broom... heck they didn't even have gov't acknowledgement of the marriage!

Oh, Ok, yeah i agree. the "Religious Ceremony" has nothing to do with Marriage, and it's not needed to be "Married"

I am not assuming anything

I call it how it is.

A marriage without spiritual aspects is a civil union.

The government has no authority over spiritualism.

They have authority over the contract that gives benefits.

Pretending a common law marriage gains any spiritual aspect from government is delusional along the lines of religion.

My words do not take anything away from anyones marriage but only points you to the greater than government realm where things like love are accounted for and highlighting the fact that the love is between you and yours any does not benefit or rely on government.

you are calling it how you wish it was!!! especially since marriage originated as being just a mere contract....often times with the bride having little say in the matter and religion had very little to do with it.

Who claimed that?

CHOICE - religion
CHOICE - no religion
CHOICE - marriage (legal)
CHOICE - no marriage
CHOICE - other

Society and law disagrees with you. No matter how hard you try to redefine marriage so it fits your beliefs it isn't going to change.

true dat

If it was not so clear then I would be no big deal.

I guess I will take my ball and go home whenever any two people ready to enter a contract can benefit from ins. companies and gov. the same as lovers can
