I'm amazed so many here are falling for the scare tactic. The last time the givernment shut down people still got their benefits.

C'mon people.

P.S. That's a typo..but I'm just gonna leave it.

ya, if you want to add a little panic into the mix, make it so that they and their aides don't get their back pay when they finally decide to get back to work...

Next months seems about right for the next doom porn month, what was it again Oct 7, aha!

Either everyone is spreading the doom porn, or is it that the doom is looming in the shadows and we should see this as warnings.

Peace

I think the people who receive these benefits should work for it. . .

Starting positions would be replacing each and every member of Congress, then the HoR, the Senate, all the way to their crooked crony cohorts positioned in anything that has to do with the Fed.
Might start a trend and it's much easier then a regular torch and pitchfork revolution.

Strange timing on this tread, just a few minutes ago the store in my nice little middle class neighbor stopped taking debt and food stamps due to a computer glitch. There are five other stores and and least five banks within a mile radius - and there was still semi-hysteria.

For sure there will be riots if the stop food stamps - it would take less than 48 hours.

As for funding actually being cut off - maybe. A few days of riots might stop the deadlock.

Unless 'they' want riots to happen. It's a possibility.

The scary part is 46 million people qualify for SNAP benefits.

What's that mean?

it means that the wages today are crap compared to the cost of living? or maybe that the new jobs that we've gotten fall far short from the old jobs we had, but now china and india have?
or... maybe it just means that there's a lot of people who screwed up and had kids they couldn't afford... who knows.

Point c.

Definately a lot of people with kids they can't afford. The other stuff doesn't matter it's all personal responsability.

The idea of the Federal Government shutting down sounds great in theory, but of course only the parts that benefit the people actually shut down. None of the spying, bombing or other disgusting behaviors of the Government will actually be affected.

They better be careful not to stay shut down too long, though. People might realize how little we actually need a Federal Government and especially the do nothing politicians.

Tell people that the Federal Government shuts down 2 days every week with no problems at all and they look at you weird.

They have to add a system like that now don't they in order for people to be able to live?

Now the corporations take over and force the same robot made consumer goods down our throat?

Maybe they will make it so it works like food stamps where you can't buy whatever you want with them only what they say where they say.

Riot Act

The source article is titled "SNAP: USDA Says Prepare For Nationwide Riots", but the USDA didn't actually say that. The inference is made by the article author, Susan Duclos, who does not appear to be an employee or representative of the USDA.

Just sayin'

The reason previous shutdowns didn't affect food stamps is because in the past the USDA had reserve funds, they were able to continue issuing benefits even after they lost their funding for a while. Luckily, the reserve didn't run out before congress kicked the can down the road.

I see people calling food stamp users lazy and all kinds of things. Many do abuse the system, that's a fact. However, many families struggle to buy food, and many of those go to work every day and still have to rely on food stamps. In the past decade, the price of everything has gone up except the price of labor. Jobs are also few and far between now. Sure they tell us the economy is getting better, but from where I'm standing, it clearly isn't. Something they also don't consider is that while some still have their jobs, thier working hours have been cut. So they are working, but not making as much as they used to. The politicians are really to blame for much of this for favoring corporations that back them.

Excluding those that abuse the system, the food stamp program is the only way legitimate famlies can eat, including those that work their tails off to make ends meet. Many are disabled and simply can't work.

Can this cause riots? Sure it can. Not long ago the EBT system went down for just a day, and it resulted in turmoil. That was an isolated case as well. Imagine 46 million people losing their benefits at a time when they are likely low on food since the benefits generally only supply food for a month. People do desperate things when they are hungry, especially when they have kids to feed. Even the most moral people will have to do something.

Something that I don't see talked about is the affect this can have on the economy. Let's say the average benefit amount is $800 a month, which should be pretty close give or take a few. Multiply that times $46 million, that means US business will lose $36,800,000,000 in food sells in just one month.

Food is a very basic resource necessary for survival, you take that away from 46 million people at one time, and you have major problems. We are just nine days away from Anarchy, probably not that long. When people start getting hungry, and start hearing thier kid's stomaches growling, they're going to do what is necessary to stay alive, even if this means lying, cheating, stealing and even killing. Before you know it, it's a civil war or a revolution. I'm not sure which would be worst.

Those that abuse the system are to blame, but primarily it is the Government to blame for meddling with the economy to the point of forcing people to rely on this program. Now, we have a group of politicians using the poor (once again) to get what they want. We are all fools really, because we keep voting these jerks into office. People don't even look at the people on the ticket anymore, they look at the political party they are associated with and vote for them, knowing very little about the candidate because they choose to put on their political party glasses that filter out the facts in many cases.
