I guess it depends. We are getting her side of the story filtered by a media source that wants to stoke the anti-cop, racial bias narrative.

Did something wrong happen? Maybe. Was it exactly like she said? Maybe.

But given the way the narratives around certain prominent events have gone in this country lately, I would almost bet that there is more to it than just this one story makes it seem. Remember how Michael Brown was just as innocent, would be college student, minding his own business? How he was in the process of running away?

Remember how actual evidence didn't exactly bear that full narrative that all the main media outlets pushed out?

I trust every word out of this womans mouth! I mean no one could believe she was driving a 12 year old car? registration/license? Yeah who calls themselves a "banker"? More like a teller at a bank at some point and to stroke her own ego even more she decides to mention Obama follows her on twitter.....

You don't get thrown into a mental hospital just because you're black, after hearing her side (not facts, just her side) something tells me there was some sort of reason for an evalution.

Was she a danger to herself or the community? Since when do cops refer the mentally ill to a psych ward? The next day she comes to pick up her vehicle and she's immediately put in an ambulance, escorted to the psych ward. Why did it take 8 days for a diagnosis? Obviously, she had an early diagnosis or they wouldn't have given her the lithium. Or is lithium an SOP in psych wards.

You know who's crazy here????? The cops and medical professionals at the psych ward. The victim can claim race bias but whatever the race, this should not EVER happen to anyone unless they evidence immediate dangerous actions. And even then, have a psych doctor come and do an evaluation. Did they do that? NO.

This whole story blows my mind.

How do you know they didn't do the evaluation? You have the medical records from the hospital? You think they throw random people in the psych ward for 8 days for no reason?????

If she was sent there and they felt she wasn't a danger she could have signed herself out within 72 hours, she obviously was acting out in some sort of way for them to feel they needed to keep her.

Again let me remind you, these are her accounts of the story and she wouldn't lie for any reasons. It's not like she has a motive to lie besides a huge payday for a nonsense story that will get thrown out as soon as a judge reads it.

I don't think NYC slush fund has enough cash in it to pay for this. This will cost NYC a few million.

A few million? I wouldn't give up until the city owed me enough to have more than Donald Trump.

A few million for what is escencially kidnap and rape? I hope she bankrupts NYC.

And to the racists in here saying she is automatically lying because she's black. You should be ashamed.

Who cares? The same thing happened to me and I'm white. I spent TWO weeks in TWO successive psych wards because the neighbor was pissed at me and told the police I was schizophrenic.

I didn't get any press. Suck it up, buttercup. It had nothing to do with being black.

Did both situations have something to do with police overreach? I would say so!

Isn't that the core concern here? That Americans can be treated in such ways by law enforcement?

I think you Yanks are dragging the barrel a bit. A black woman gets stopped in her car gets arrested and psychologically evaluated then released and given her car back??????? Outraged or what?
Where is an innocent black woman stopped in her car and killed by a police officer, cue shouts of police brutality. Do you all regularly trawl the news for police arresting any black people and then scrutinise the news item for some such outrage that you can justify police hate blacks for (add any reason that suits your story).
Mental illness is not something to be taken so trivially.

Yes what you are noticing is an agenda, which is why often times people cry shill on this website because they see posters who seemingly have blinders on and only look and comment certain ways in every thread. I agree,I think people are severely underestimating mental illness and how it's handled. This is a ridiculous thread being spun as racism. Some folks wouldn't feel normal if they didn't have a racist to fight. Cops need robbers type thing. Embarrassing for our country truly.

Look, at the end of the day what needs to be established is the veracity of her story. is she:
A. a banker
B. own the BMW
C. does the POTUS follow her on social media.
if the answer is yes to all of the above then it doesnt matter what anybody thinks.
Oh and by the way that little paragraph about her running into the traffic can be explained by something as easy as diabetes. not saying she has it. but hey, deny ignorance and think outside the box.

I'll bet dimes to dollar it had more to do with how she behaved during this entire fiasco that caused her detainment in the mental health facility. For the record, I have a legitimate mental illness and have been to more inpatient centers than I can count. Most of the folks who are in those places have some of the wildest stories to tell about how they got there...and most of the time they can get very loud and belligerent in retelling their tales....which, for me, is a dead giveaway for why they ended up in the facility to begin with. They simply don't behave rationally, and many are borderline delusional.

On the other hand, I'm usually so docile and non-verbal that I can't communicate myself effectively to law enforcement, and I get taken in because of my inability to communicate "properly". Sometimes it's all in the behavior of a person that determines whether or not you go to inpatient. Some get overtly assertive and talk a mile a minute, others just retreat into themselves and clam up.

We simply don't have any testimony or evidence on her behavior that influenced their decision to send her to inpatient other than the police statements. So it's really hard for me not to jump to immediate conclusions, I'm just sharing anecdotal testimony here, so please take it with a grain or two of salt.

I'm not condoning what happened in this case in the slightest....but if you don't "act a certain way" in line with societal expectations during such encounters, you run the risk of finding yourself in a facility.

It's scary, disorientating, and financially draining....and sadly, it happens all the time.

Yeah, it can be, but the cops wouldn't know that and neither would anyone else unless she told them. She might not know herself. Sadly, diabetes is often undiagnosed in blacks because they don't receive medical care for a variety of reasons, only one of which is reduced availability.

As for someone calling those of us doubting the story because of her race, I never said I doubted it because of her race. I doubt it because there is a push to create an atmosphere of police oppression of blacks wherever possible. To that end, stories will be spun to create that narrative. We only have her side of the story.

I like to know all the facets before I make my decision.

Ok, look, let me explain how easy this was for the police to work out but they chose to do something they have the power to do to anyone that lives in america.
Woman gets pulled over, car gets taken to impound, paper work of owner of car is with car, woman claims ownership, paperworks checked for verification againsed INSURANCE PAPERWORK, PLATES GET RUN FOR VERIFICATION OF WOMANS IDENTIFICATION TO CROSS REFERENCE INSURANCE, WHICH MATCHES OWNERSHIP IN DMV DATA BASE OF LICENSE HELD.
you get the picture.
except in this case the person was tricked into being cuffed, abducted and drugged for eight days.
Beacon of democracy for the western world my ass!

Sorry man, the story doesn't add up, not to say false imprisonment does not occur, because it does. However I feel you and a few others are severely underestimating mental illness and the authority's ability and or lack thereof to deal with mental illness. I think more information is needed in this story, I do not think we are getting the whole story.

What doesn't add up, that she is a banker?? that she owned the Beemer she was driving?? that Obama followed her on twitter??
Enlightenedservant, cops do crazy fkup sht all the time for less reasons, again the lady in question was never in a mental institution until this point, It is simply amazing how some will call into question complaints about police misconduct especially if the one doing the complaining is an AA and the incident was not caught camera, and even then some will go but but she must have done something!!
Driving and dancing while Black in a not so expensive car..why the nerve of some people..

But in your case your neighbour called the cops and told them YOU! was cray cray, and actually you shouldn't have sucked it up, who paid for the time you were in the mental institution or time loss from work, sue both neighbour and cop.
As for the incident with this woman , this took place in NYC Black bankers and people with expensive cars are ubiquitous, if a white dude of similar age stopped at a signal and was dancing in his BMW and Joe the cop approached and he gave the same exact information what is the likelyhood of him ending up in a mental institution.
